Constant white noise

Two S units isn't normal? Oh boy, tuned in for the fix. I think the lowest noise I have found is in the parking lot at work. Haha.

Kill the 2-SU noise and you’ll still find this a nice addition:

WEST MOUNTAIN RADIO CLEARSPEAKER

A high fidelity mobile speaker with Digital Signal Filtration (DSP). DSP can also be added as an inline module. BHI another supplier.

There are both posts & threads on this unit. Also at eHam. Mine I’ve had five years and it’s ridden in a semi at least 250k miles, many of those bouncing through the oilfield.

It only seems expensive until you turn it on. I tell other drivers with $600 radios my little points card Uniden has better ears. And I can back it up.

In rural areas — radio wide open — I’ve reached my limit of trying to follow more than three conversations. Have to back down RF Gain.

Does it cut noise? Sure. But I think a better description is that I can hear around the noise such that voices previously unheard are now legible.

Wall Warts...Touch Lamps...both can generate noise EVEN when not in use!
Power tool battery chargers! Again even if just plugged in!
Fancy refrigerators with touch panels
Same with Microwaves and laptops/tablets with touch screens
And the list goes on!

I have several neighbors close by. I used to contend with noisy receive & give off rfi to them on and off alot when I was at 30 ft. When I put up a different tower and got the base of the Imax at 62 ft what a difference it made. I had very little noise and didn't bother any of my neighbors anymore.. regardless of my power output.. So with that said, sometimes getting up higher can really help you get receive/transmit further and cleaner..

Along with switching from an A99 at 30 ft to an Imax at 60+.. I also added a choke and low pass filter (bencher) for rfi issues to insure neighborhood satisfaction.

I actually have been looking at these! I didn’t know how well they worked. The ones that are good piece away from me, I’d say 80% of them are right at the noise level and I can make out bits and pieces of what they’re saying. The other 20% I can’t hear at all because of the static.

I so wish I could go to 60ft or so! Due to the trees and powerlines I’m not sure I could because of guy wires. I sure would like to though! It may be time to cut some trees lol

This level of device pretty simple. Effective.

The MFJ-784B appears a whole other world.

Well, that narrows it down, the source is outside your house.

do you have a battery powered AM radio, tune it off any broadcast stations and move around to try to find the source.

Could be anything.. dirty insulators on a power line, battery charger in a neighbors garage, grow lights, ect.

is it there 24/7 or just certain times?

Small update. Went and got a 8ft ground rod and drove it 7ft into the ground. Still using 4 gauge wire. No change. Even used anti oxidant to try and get better connection. Still no change

The noise is not on the braid (ground) side of the coax, its on the center conductor.

I’m having a frustrating problem with 2 S-units of static constantly. Even my old house I had 2 S-units of static. My old set up was a 22ft push up pole with a imax 2000. I recently put up a new push up pole 30’ with a Maco V5/8. 2 ground wires with #4 wire used (ground rods drove 2ft in the ground) And I STILL have 2 S-units of static. Swapped radios... same. Turned off all breakers except the room the CB is in and.... same. I have literally tried everything I can think of and absolutely nothing has helped even the slightest bit. I do have powerlines nearby and I do think that’s my problem. What I don’t understand is I know people with antennas close to power poles and their receive is quite. What throws me off is 2 different houses and the very same results.... 2 S-units.

ANY help with greatly be appreciated. I may be missing something but please send your 2 cents

I have found where I live very rural, so all internet is wireless antenna, this stuff is awful for noise, I have to turn mine off to receive, gives me 3 s units, My neighbour is far away but within sight, I think his tower, and even the isp tower which is 3 miles away all put noise in the air. Some nights my meter is clean no s units, some nights I get 2 s units. It is about all that is out here that could cause noise. I am on a dead end dirt road, next house is 1/2 mile away, so my noise seems to be internet, some could be electrical lines as well. Most nights as long as my own internet antenna is off I have no s points of noise. So cannot complain.

I brought in my Galaxy 99 from my mobile and hooked it up. I would say the 99 receives 25% better than the Galaxy 2517 I primarily run. I found some locals on base stations talking way off that were right at the noise level. I compared the radios between the 2 on the same antenna, the 2517’s static is “louder” than the 99. It’s like on the 99 I can hear the words of what the guys are saying completely to where on the 2517 it’s static mixed in “more” and it’s difficult to pull out what the guys are saying. It’s hard to explain but the static between the 2 radios “sound different” making the 99 the better receiving radio. May look into some receive mods on the 2517.
