Convert 10m ham for LEGAL CB power level use?

Respectfully, what your doing is trying to get others to agree with your 'justifications' for illegal use of equipment.
This is like trying to get a judge to agree why you done something illegal. He won't agree.
Even a Ham rig won't hear the other radios any better than your CB will so there is no gain in being able to get to 'them' with higher power you would sooner ot later use on some other justification.

No, I really am just asking if there's any technical advantage to doing it that way. If it was just about power, I could pick up a dozen high power amplifiers off Craigslist right now in under an hour, along with three Galaxy radios. If there's no technical merit, I'll pick up another Cobra 29 and call it a day.

As far as one guy asking, and it starting a domino effect...I'd say that started well over 20 years ago, and just about every guy driving OTR has an illegal radio these days. You're certainly free to believe that if I had the equipment, I'd use it to the full potential, and there's really no way to convince you that I really don't have any interest in CB beyond it being an on-trail radio, and that I still prefer my ham radios to the CB any day.

Of course, all that said, I'm one stranger talking to a bunch of others. I gain, nor lose, anything if people here choose to "read between the lines", and believe something other than what I've said.

With the HTX-100 that aint happening. Not unless you are willing to track down a CPU from one of its more flexible cousins, and track down someone with the skills and equipment to solder a surface mount IC chip.
The magnum 257 is basically the same radio, but will work on CB as well as ham. .

It was my understanding that the Magnum was almost identical to the HTX-10, which is a different radio than the 100. Regardless, mods that's one of the pages that I was looking at on the 100 specifically.

But from what I'm gathering is that there's really no gain to be had by what I'm thinking of doing, given by the number of responses that I've gotten that just say to get a used Galaxy and be done with it (other places that just this forum)

But for 10 meter monoband radios being better on AM than CB, no advantage.
CB's are not all crap, they made some really cool CB's over the years.

but a cheap cb will preform awesome with a good antenna and a good cb will preform poor with a bad antenna.

you should spend more on your antenna than radio, think wilson 1000/5000, lil-wil, 4' or longer firestick, francis, K40 or if you can bear it, 102" whip.

The magnum 257 is basically the same radio, but will work on CB as well as ham. The only other difference is the SSB filters on it, the HTX-100 uses a narrower filter. There was a few more variants of this chassis, such as the Optima Yeticom everybody's raving about.
There was also a FCC accepted version of this radio made by midland, expandable to operate all the way to the top of 10 meters, but without the FM mode. Those are rare, and cost just as much as an export.
The reason the HTX-100 can be had for as little as $50 is Radio Shack had a policy where they would impose major penalties if one of their vendors supplied them with a radio that could be converted for CB use.
Believe me, I looked into converting the HTX-100, even found a supplier of chips, but the cost to have them burned was well, more than you could just buy a Magnum 257.

What about simply changing out the ref oscillator crystal in the HTX-100?

And I wonder if FM wouldn't be the better mode for what urbex is attempting to do?

hmm, seems like i ask someone about changing out the crystal on the htx-10 and it would not work. i know you can on the htx-100 but it only operates in USB and CW modes. Crystals can be swapped on the HR2600 as well, but it looses RX sensitivity and TX is off, display still reads 28.xxx, etc.
If you do find a freq mod for the HTX-10, it is either 100% absolute bullshit, or it might have only been for an early production run.

Oh, FM would be a better mode for what urbex is trying to do. It be really awesome if he would run an amp, with FM, no worries about matching a radio to the amp, or distortion, i mean, with even the cheapest class-c junk on the market, overdriven to the point its about to melt, there will be no distortion of audio.
not to mention no static, noise, pops or etc that end up in the AM signal when it negative peaks below the noise floor.
Running FM in these days of post apocalyptic CB radio is like saying, private conversation, were talking amongst ourselves. It kinda pisses some operators off, especially the ones that are obsessed with being distortedly loud and overmodulated.

just get a Road Pro Titan II 485... Just like the Magnum 257, BUT it only has a single 2sc1969 final. I might be willing to sell mine, I will set the power to whatever you want it to be

There may be a bit of confusion as to what I'm trying to do here,... we're often within a few feet of the vehicles around us, and would be concerned about overloading the front ends of radios near me

Ok,.............. then just solder a 100 watt resister across a PL 259 connector

Had a Cobra 29 once. Had the mod for modulation, a nice american flag front plate & the blue Nitro knobs. Was a real nice radio. Wishing I should have kept it now. There are a lot of nice new cobras & Galaxies out there if you like those. Plenty of talk with those. As far as the Magnum 257, I have the blue display one. It's really nice and all, but I saw the new Optima from Yeticom on here. Really a nice re-make of the Magnum, but better. One of the newest features is the Continuous tuning feature. You can go all the way from 24.000 Khz to 29.995 Khz without changing any bands. 50 Watts of power And a nice added Filter function. Check it out!

Generally trail rides are done on established trails and many of them are on privately owned land. Just some food for thought

The FT857D is decent, though $600+, but the FT-100D is a $500-$600 radio USED, and nearly impossible to find a ($100+!) detachable head cable for, plus the AM side sounds like sh*t unless you add the $150 6Kc AM filter. :bored:

You gain VHF+UHF, plus a whole lotta HF to play with.

Plus, they're proper radios.
