I bought a Connex 4400 Turbo from there a few years back. I specifically asked JR for one that was either untouched in a sealed box (they didn't have one) or only had the frequency conversion done. I was clear that I didn't want one that had any mods or adjustments done to it as I was buying it to be a bench guinea pig that I could experiment on. I popped the covers when I got it home and 2 of the 3 legs on the AMC transistor were cut, the driver, final, and PA bias settings were all out of whack, and there was a resistor with a cut leg (don't remember which one now).
I did put it back to stock and have since used it for quite a few experiments and ran it in my car for a year or so at one point, but I was disappointment by the dishonesty.
I've also fixed 7 or 8 Cobra 29s, for friends, that had been through that shop. Every one had the AMC diode either cut or removed and the coils turned into slinkies. Also fixed a 3300HP and a Galaxy 66V that were both similarly "tuned."
Last time I was in their shop, I saw no signs of an actual bench, no scope, no analyzer, no equipment to do an RX/TX alignment, ect. That was almost two years ago now, so I'm not sure if that's still the case, but I doubt that it's changed.
I've had no issues buying antennas, power cables, power connectors, or similar from there, but I'd never buy another radio there or allow them inside the covers of one of mine.
I know this post comes off as super negative, but I'm just going from personal experience of myself and some of my friends/coworkers.
