I like the real techie technique of leaving it on and feeling around for heat to find the short.
When I was a bench engineer for a company that used to repair videogames in the 1980s it was a valid test technique to find faulty ICs. It still is.
I suppose he could have use an unfused connection to a car battery.
. . . And maybe a tad hard on the board's traces - too . . .Smoke test is still a test.
It's just a tad destructive, and a bit unhealthy if you don't open the windows.
