Cut 102" for 10 Meter-For Wilson 5K

yeah i don't want to drill out the mast

seems like the "top half" of the 102 would fit in as an almost direct replacement for the wilson whip. I will have to take a closer look this pm and mull this over.

i need a little micrometer to make some measurements at the intended 102 cut area to measure whip diameters but I don't have one.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether there is any benefit to using the thicker lower half portion of the 102?

possibly a little more broad banded in the usable frequency range .
possibly a little better performance from staying more vertical when driving and not flexing as much .

it will definitely put more stress on the base and stinger mounting piece when driving which it was not designed for . a impact will have a lot more force going to them also . both of those can lead to water migration into it . none of those are good things . since you have four 102s and nothing better to do with them use the top section if you have to try it and let us know your results .
good luck :)

Maybe it's just me, but how do you get two 57" halves from a 102" whip  if the antenna is truly a half and half of equal length, then you'll be 6" short of your 57" goal

i might be wrong but thought u could use a 102 without the spring
and be ok on 10meters/far as cutting up a 102 nah i wouldnt
id goto h&y i think i seen replacement whips for the wilson 1k/5k
mag mounts and just cut those.once ya bottom out the whip
and trim 3-5 inches off this will stablize the whip even more,
then when its tuned for 11m.

northern, wrong choice of words, should of used top part and or bottom part

morse, whip replacements for the 5k can be had for $10 bucks, but i suspect shipping is high so since i have 4 102's, i thought i would sacrifice one.

hot rod, yes the 102 with no spring gives 1.4 swr on separate mag mount on 10meters, but i want to run the 10 meters off of the wilson 5k mag mount...essentially i will swap back and forth between two whips on the wilson 5k, one for 11 meters and one for 10 meters.

I finally compared the 102 and decided that the bottom part is too thick and would require more grinding than i had contemplated. Not too mention that the thicker heavier bottom portion of the 102 would prolly add undue stress to the wilson 5k mast as noted by robb above at some point.

So, looking at the top half of the 102 at the approximate cut point, still appears i would have to do a small amount of grinding to get it to fit into the 5k mast.

thanks for the comments, hope this understand...I am thinking this over carefully before i cut so i will update at some point
