My point was that if you are going to build something, then it would be best to do it lower first and make it right - before you commit to putting up high. So that you won't need to keep taking it down too many times until it get it right. Sounds like you got it working fine right where it is.

made the prototype (read quick and dirty bodge) 5/8 wave + three 5/8 wire radials on my house with SWR of top of my head 1-1.3 across 1.5 meg in 50 minits ...well it was getting dark, works well except when windy-SWR all over as need wire radials to be tight.

Why then do you need to change anything? What is the height of your roof? No matching network either? Have you considered getting/using an antenna tuner? Are you in a city or town; or out in open countryside?

Have already started making small parts that i will TIG weld, my goal is to have the lest amount of parts clamped or bolted E.G the radator will be only 2 parts and no overlapping of ground parts like brackets etc over the radiator.

If i can figger out how to post photos on here will post a photo of the Q D B (quick dirty bodge)

It would help a lot to see what you have done.

Sounds like a vertical dipole with three counterpoise tuned/trimmed close to 30m - to me.

well the $200+ was a gestamate but as i got quoted $334
shipping for a mako shooting star to the UK, so i maybe think $200+ for the 5/8

I cut and past some of my research here but most of i can not find as i did not save it
The best i did find a guy that model d 5/8 ground plains and found the best slope is 30* out striate is no good and show a loss compared to 1/4 wave radials
I know am on to something and as it different from every body else on here............may as well have a go

Well dave8, looks like you might be right, except for one big issue.

I made the radials slanted to 35*- 40* degrees, and the pattern and the gain look very good, with a nice full high gain RF lobe from 5* to 30* degrees with a small null showing gain @ 4.31 dbi at 18* degrees which is not bad.

The Eznec pattern shown (your idea) should be very useful, but the current flowing on the mast has to be dealt with in some effective manner and if so...that may ill-affect this pattern. So, if you're out in the country side with no neighbors to bother, I would not worry about these currents that might make TVI.

Well daveV8, if the radials are as long as the vertical radiator - then what you have constructed is a vertical dipole with extra 'counterpoise' - you call them radials.

It would work if it had one radial.

I would add another radial/counterpoise (making four of them) and use an antenna tuner like an MFJ-945e. Not that it needs it if you are getting a flat match, but the antenna might also work on other bands if you get you Ham ticket. Just some thoughts.

Will have one helluva wind-load.............the bottom 14 feet of radiator will be 2 inch or 50mm the rest is 1.5 inch or 40mm..... both with i guess 1.5mm to 2mm wall,..........good quality with a good springiness in it

I was making a not so funny, 'funny' play on words. Bodge isn't used in the USA but I could figure out what you were meaning so I mixed it with a word often used here in the states - modulation and came up with bodgulation - i guess you'd have to be there

Yes i will try it first with one, using the top 21.5 feet of mast or what ever the length works out to be.
So the so 239 socket will be at the bottom of this insulated from it, with coax going up the centre of the mast /counterpoise and to come out the side of the insulator between the radiator and this part of the mast.

So will be a huge antennae at 43 feet long from the feed point thrusting into the sky.........hmmmmmmmmmmm may be thats a good name for it........i like penetrator but that been taken.......... so mabe "sky thruster 58-58" .the 58-58 denotes 5/8wave over 5/8 wave:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

You could call it the 10/8ths - and if it works real well you'll be 10-8! I dont know what match you decided on but i read that a 5/8 is about 100-150 ohms and a 64 is a little less so i wonder what about 7 feet of 75 ohm coaz would do for the swrs like a matcher transformer. your suposed to use the velocity calculation times a 1/4 wave to get the right length

as you can see it was a VERY quick and dirty bodge
It was done to replace the dead coil in the bottom of the bracket which was removed
But it works very well (when not windy) and i cannot believe im posting photos of my bodgey work.
Like i say all fixed and working in 50 minutes
The wire radials are very easy to work with as i had this antenna with 8 number of approx 4 feet long radials and i needed help with it so i not bend them, with the wire they just hang and you sort them out after
My new antenna i wont to build to last many years

yes i fist see that long time ago in the big dummy guide to CB that's wear i get the 6 feet from for the ring
