Hey everyone, I have a chevy k10 and recently got a cobra cb for free. I've have been seeing dual whips but not dual 102 whips. I wanted to use one whip for my aftermarket head unit, in hopes of picking up radio stations more clearly and farther away. Is this possible? I want one whip on each side of my bed if possible.:confused: I searched this topic but found nothing to answer my questions, so if you could I would appreciate everyones help

You probably would be better off by using one quality antenna. One can run two whips; but it isn't that easy to set up. Unless you have a shop do it for you. A single mag mount Wilson 1000 or Wilson 5000 will work wonders and can be put inside the cab when not in use.

NJCM,
Using dual antennas (of any kind) does have a useful purpose. That purpose is to make the antenna system directional (bi-directional usually). Dual antennas require some 'special' impedance matching and that is definitely not as easy as it sounds. A 1/4 wave (full sized antenna, not a shortened one) will yield a little more 'range' than most mobile antennas. But don't expect a "night/day" kind of difference/improvement. Any 'range' estimate is -always- dependent on where you happen to be at any particular time AND propagation.
If you are after the 'looks' thingy, then that's not related to performance at all. You could probably get the same performance with several other individual antennas. Do whatever "turns you on".
There are a lot of 'myths' associated with antennas, the 'dualies' too. Don't get bitten too hard by them...

I don't think he is wanting them co phased. I think he wants to use one for RX/TX on CB and the other for RX from 88-108mhz.

Yes he would have to isolate the co-phase harness from the the other unit for receive otherwise if he keyed the cb radio it would transmit back into the other unit and a P00F would occur which an antenna switch may be usable but not having done this I don't know how this would affect the tx of the cb radio.

Considering how most broadcast radios are designed, I don't think a 102" whip would be of any particular benefit. Of course, that would depend on what was being used for that 'FM' radio now.

It is the original 1984 antennna it runs under the front glass I'm assuming? I'm thinking anything would be better than what i have. I do like the 102 whips but do i neccesarily need them that big?

i got the same impression, in which case a single 1/4 wave whip for 11m would be ideal for cb, and a decent proper 88-108 mhz antenna would be a much better bet for your head unit, as one designed for that band will work much better than a cb antenna.

I ran dual 102 whips for years,i ran them on 10 and 11 mtrs..they will out rec/trans any other antenna...wilson/k40 and you can run any amp you want and not worry,73s de n0zna/John

Hey Mack lookie, lookie, someone tried my co-phase scheme after-all, and he's getting back to us like I'd hope, and he had splended results. See the extensive reporting above. He even did some multi antenna comparison testing.

I told ya', I told ya' it'd work.

Thank you n0zna.

I almost forgot: thank you too Mack (y)

Could anyone give me a product list? Since a cb antenna isn't adequate for an fm radio. What is? I want the same length antennas if possible, I could run 3 antennas one for the radio and 2 for the cb, but would 2 whips for my cb be beneficial to me? Thanks for the quick replys!
