I've been selling on eBay for years but went to sell something today and got a notification that I needed to update my info and use their new payment system.

No more paypal for payments.

I started the process and it asked for my DOB and SSN.....

Not sure what I want to do but these types of changes annoy me. I like that I can reach a lot of buyers on eBay but always liked that paypal gave me one layer of separation.

when they end paypal? i just paid for an item using my paypal account

That doesn't make sense. I would make sure that you weren't directed to a scam site. Paypal is clearly still in the payment options on this one.

It's not a scam but it is a pain in the Arse. What eBay has done is made it better for them they get their money right away and eBay pays PayPal percentage if you noticed your percentage went from 10% to 12.75% and then you are required to ship right away and then 3 to 5 days later you will get your money from eBay deposited directly in your bank account I don't like it, it sucks because with the old system you got your money the minute they paid now you wait. eBay sold this as making it easier for the seller but it was clearly done to make sure eBay gets their money immediately while you wait for yours.

Strange, I've been a seller on eBay over 20 years, I have multiple items for sale at this time and have received no notification of any change of how money changes hands, I thought eBay owns pay pal? will look into this asap

You can still pay with PayPal as a buyer but as a seller things have changed and you have to register your bank account with them.

not a scam site I literally filled out everything to sell a item and then it said I needed to update my account and forced me to that page. I’ve had the same personal account for 20 years and it’s asking for my ssn and dob to sell - seriously, I’ve been getting notifications each week that I would have to update soon because of their changes and now it has happened. Everyone will likely see it the next time you try to sell something.

It’s called the updated managed payments system -

Individual sellers (one person or a married couple) will need to provide:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security Number (SSN)

Well even if it ISN'T a scam........ you can BET scams will pop up all over creation .....TRYING to "look just like" Ebay..... to get that info.

Ebay needs to come up with a really safe way to do this.

I think its for the GOVT.
I had the same sort of things starting to be demanded on my online investment apps like coinbase/M1/Robinhood etc.
Probably so income can be monitored.
EBay not too many years ago was tax free.
Once govt got a taste they always want more.
Probably want a piece of your side of it as well.

eBay caters to themselves and buyers. Generally speaking, it is a very unfriendly marketplace for sellers. While I'll still buy some things off eBay, if it's hard to find or I find a great price, I haven't sold a single item there in over 5 years. By all rights, the owner of the item being sold, determines the method of payment they will accept, not the advertiser placed in the middle. eBay should ONLY have the authority to determine how they are paid their fees, not yours.
