Echo settings

On AM-19: Most guys try to set Echo using Talkback.

It’s not just that it’s too much, it’s also that every other “problem” with audio quality seems amplified. Mic Gain, improper speaking distance, etc.

This order appears to work:
1. Turn off Echo for a moment.
2. Get them to commit to distance from lips.
3. Set Mic Gain

4. Set Echo.

5. Have them look closely at settings to memorize.

Most guys are guessing.

How to start is: “Let’s set your radio from scratch”. (Go to different channel).

I also recommend they check & clean all connections. Might’ve been 70,000-miles (since Thanksgiving thru today’s date).

Echo adds a bit that helps many rigs.

The EQplus from w2ihy has it, but it is off all the time, improving readabillety of the audio, one reason i speak in the table mounted mike from the side 2 inch distance.
No echo, downwards expander tight, no room sounds to get into my signal.
Th excellent internal Eqplus compressor/limitter takes care of the rest, radio compressor off.
Equaliser tone control used sparingly, mostly adding some lows in FM only.
I also speak into all my mics this way. Turn it sideways and speak across the front. This keeps the "P" from making a popping sound.

Another one of those controversial topics.... some hate it, some like it..... I agree some get annoying with it but I also like a hint of echo on my own transmit. Of course, it's different on radios from different manufacturers so I can't say a certain pot location because I have to adjust it by hearing. It's different from my rangers to my strykers or even the anytone. AM I like a hint, SSB no echob at all but that's just me. Now I've heard other base operators with a little echo on theirs and sound studio quality. Then I hear that bull hauler on AM with so much echo volume he sounds like a robot or so much reverb that sounds like he's got a jaw harp stuck in his throat!
We're all different, and I respect that, some are just either ignorant as to how to use it then there's the few who know they're annoying and don't care.... but hey, a guy doesn't even need echo to be annoying and not care... there's the guy every time I pass through okc that has to continuously say he ain't got no panties on haha

Shadetree if you put a little piece of cloth or sponge over the mike and when you talk into it, it should cut out the pop sounds as you talk.
This technique is used in recording studios. Its called a pop shield, and when applied it means that the mike can be spoken into directly in front of the mike element. I hope that makes sense for you. It would mean that you need not take the sideways approach to modulating.

Toke , That would be my concern , I had my Silver Eagle modded to some of the high pitches out & also have a Sadelta Cm-40 compression mic I use on SSB . But after seeing your post doing some research they have a Vid on Youtube and the Op is showing how one similar to yours (?) performs on SSB , sounded decent to me ? :) Also the S meter was showing a lot more compared to when he was using his stock mic ( he points this out in vid ) . Honestly I'm using a Galaxy after market hand mic and everyone says my station sounds fantastic am and ssb.
I also made a 6 pin male to 4 pin female jumper so I can use this compressor on pretty much any radio I want. 15960707463583863810800316966336.jpg 15960706224367752019063122657683.jpg

Hello All: Wow a Echo Box I didn't know they had such a thing. I am gonna get me one thats great!

While going to work takes about 20 minutes driving time, monitoring 38 LSB some times I can hear stations from back east just starting to roll in, in the early morning before the sun comes up. If there using some Echo its a lot easier to hear and understand them. So Echo does help in some cases.

Picked up a used 2 meter radio from the TRW Swap Meet in Los Angles a few years back and gave it to a friend. It had a CB Mic with Echo in it and my friend used the Echo on the local 2 meter repeater and what a pot stirring thing that was, the rule resitters guys when Balletic Incorporated. I didn't think too much about it Echo so what, we are adults right. No, after a short qso that's all we heard these guys bitch about for days and days. Then one of the locals came out and said the Echo was NOT against any rules. I was in tears of laughter, I offered to buy the radio.

Drove IH40 westbound thru the Mojave yesterday. I can see why Echo & Sanity could set up a dissonance. That’s a moonscape.

Here is mine with the Stryker ( echó at 12 and delay at around 1:30) and the other one with a HF radio and hand mic. Base mic didn’t work as well as hand mic with the HF transceiver
