I agree people kill a lot of radio's hunting for a few watt's. I have never advocated swapping parts to increase power. I advocate using higher gain lower noise transistors to improve how the radio functions, to make it quieter, to increase head room and to increase gain a bit. Generally if done properly when you go to higher output voltage regulator, caps, transistors you end up with a unit that runs cooler, sounds better and is more durable.
I think the MRF 455 is the best transistor they ever used as a final in all of the clones that came after the HR2510. I also think that all of the units benefit from Roger Byrds mod's as long as you are not using them to hunt for a few extra watt's.
I love the Emperor 5010's and wish I could have bought one but they did not stay on the market long enough for that to happen. I already had a 2950 which kicked it butt and when that got stolen they where no longer available hence my move to the Lincoln. You seldom see a 5010 for sale on Ebay or Craigslist and it is even rarer to find one that has not been butchered. Plus most of them go for $150 or more when in decent shape for $100 more you can get a 10/11/12 meter 2950DX so hard to justify the used market price on them. If I ever did get a nice unit that was not abused and butchered at a decent price I would love to have one. I have to admit Ihate the display size on the Lincoln. Also I wish the chip switch was still being made.
