emperor 5010

I agree people kill a lot of radio's hunting for a few watt's. I have never advocated swapping parts to increase power. I advocate using higher gain lower noise transistors to improve how the radio functions, to make it quieter, to increase head room and to increase gain a bit. Generally if done properly when you go to higher output voltage regulator, caps, transistors you end up with a unit that runs cooler, sounds better and is more durable.

I think the MRF 455 is the best transistor they ever used as a final in all of the clones that came after the HR2510. I also think that all of the units benefit from Roger Byrds mod's as long as you are not using them to hunt for a few extra watt's.

I love the Emperor 5010's and wish I could have bought one but they did not stay on the market long enough for that to happen. I already had a 2950 which kicked it butt and when that got stolen they where no longer available hence my move to the Lincoln. You seldom see a 5010 for sale on Ebay or Craigslist and it is even rarer to find one that has not been butchered. Plus most of them go for $150 or more when in decent shape for $100 more you can get a 10/11/12 meter 2950DX so hard to justify the used market price on them. If I ever did get a nice unit that was not abused and butchered at a decent price I would love to have one. I have to admit Ihate the display size on the Lincoln. Also I wish the chip switch was still being made.

emperor detune

hi..
i have a emperor 5010 that i need to de-tune on sideband..assuming the radio is unmolested, other than the frequency mod. by using vr 103 ssb power, will i be able to bring the ssb power output down below 20 watts pep? preferably below 18 watts? my plan was to use a small 2 pill amp..bout 100 watts or so. so i need a lower input drive

The tech emailed me that he finished up my 5010. He found a bad cap that was causing low power out and some of the display dimming. He said the display dims out on all of them some what because of the design of the radio. I don't remember my other one doing that but maybe it did. He has nothing good to say about the Emperor and said they or ok but not a very well made radio. They break alot he said also. He makes me almost sorry I bought it now but I liked the one I had long ago.

Sounds like your tech is right. I have nothing good to say about the 5010 either. I have had 2 of them and they both were crap..

i gotta 5010 and love it. mine has no noticable dimming.ive also had a 2510 aswell
and havent seen any noticable differences in performances between the two.
far as one being made better than the other well im not smart enough to know that.
i do kbnow a local ham here uses one on 10 meters in his mobile.

I own a 5010 also no problems at all seems to be a very good ssb radio all the locals say it sounds great on ssb...don't really talk on AM at all ...if you guys don't want your 5010 send them to me I will dispose of them for you

The TS-5010/Shogun's I own are great, I prefer them over the 2510/2600/2830/Lincolns.If someone has one they think is junk, the radio must have been hacked.
