EYEBALLING A BAD TUBE?

Wavrider, what amps do you have?
I have a yaesu FL-2100B that will dead key 1000 watts. Although I have never transmitted at that level.

 HOLY BAT CRAP BATMAN!!! Getting 1000 watts dead key OUT of an amp rated for 1200 watts INPUT is insane. How did you ever manage to keep those 572B's in their sockets? I would imagine they would want to take off like bottle rockets. The FL-2100B was designed to run 600 watts out max from a pair of 572B's operating class B. I hope you just did it one time as a "I wonder what if" scenario.

that is INSANE, the fl 2100B I had was lucky to see 600 watts out on a good day.

I did not think much of that amp due to the bias circuit being marginal at best.

To answer your questions on what amps I have.

AL80B
Heathkit SB1000
Drake L4, converted to L4B with pair of 3-500ZG
Two SB-200's
Home brew 3-1000Z
Clipperton L

Winter project may be to build up a pair of 4X1 so BJ can hear my weak signal this winter on 75 meters:sneaky:

I have not looked inside of it but the previous owner said he had some modifications done to it. I did hook it up and just for grins and giggles tested the output to see if the previous owner was BS'n me. I hit it with the full out put from the IC-746 on AM and FM and keyed it up. It surely did move the meter up to the 1 KW level.
He said he had installed new tubes and a transformer upgrade. I know for a fact the this is one heavy son of gun. Are the fans on these things always so noisy? It roars and heats my radio room up in a hurry.

I suppose it could do that with mods but certainly not stock. It makes me wonder what mods were done to it however hitting it with a full 100 watts could account for some of that extra output. Usual drive level is about 60 watts for full output. As for the noise well in your case since mods were done to the transformer etc to increase output I have to assume the cooling was modded as well. The amp should run fairly quiet and not be objectionable. Does it have a fan or a blower on it? Blowers are noisy. Stock has a fan.

It has a blower like the central air system for the house. He did caution me to keep the air filter clean as it might over heat.

You have me wondering what the mods were and what tubes are in it. Was it modified for a ceramic tube or are there still glass tubes in it? A blower is noisy overkill for most glass tubes but definitely required for external anode ceramic type tubes.

I don't know what has been been done to it. I have not opened it up yet. I am currently rebuilding my video security system. After I get four more cameras(Out of eight) installed and finish finalizing all of the hook ups I can get in to it and find out. I know I will have to purchase a high voltage probe. The previous owner cautioned me to be careful around the high voltages because they are higher than I would expect. As soon as I get the chance I will be in it up to my elbows.
