Yikes! Another good one on Yahoo news. Broadband Internet for whole village in UK shut down every day @ 7:00am. Took the experts 18 months to figure it out. Maybe they should have used the tinySA instead for troubleshooting.

I saw this on my news feed also. I laughed and laughed.
Rf Burns on mauldroppers could've found the problem in less time.

Funny, U.K. used to have a "spy squad" floating about the streets of London at night looking for that very effect...

This is why FCC gets itself into trouble at times, and with the UK - this is no different.

The U.K. used to TAX those that used TV's or Monitors to watch stations like the BBC - as a means of income to pay for that "states" Media operations.

So to find "evaders" they used vans tuned to the IF noises a Television and certain radios, that would emit this imaging signal - because of their "UK or FCC" approved emissions of noise on specific ranges of frequencies that would not cause interference with other units, only within themselves.

There is also the HV "Flyback" and the support circuitry like Pincushion and Color burst - which all used Xtal based timing references to generate the signals as IF, to image and develop the picture - so as TV goes in USA .

So each radio and TV was "blueprinted" to allow for the services to be detected when they were on and used for such purposes.

If you owned a Shortwave radio receiver, that type of IF emission was in one portion of the band of IF processing, TV's and other decoders used another - so the "violators" would be detected only in specific frequencies that were needed to make the TV tune into the station (like the BBC) would emit in that region.

Surprised to see HDTV didn't make all the TV converted to be thrown out and let the newer Flat panel types take over. However, I am not surprised to know that one TV produced enough "Wattage" TX'd in a given spectrum to wipe out the internet and cable. I have experienced Arcade games that can knock out police band radios a local mall security would use to monitor and communicate.

So this is nothing new to hear, just amazed that they (being the immigrant and newcomers') didn't know what we - as natives and indigenous - endured living thru the Cold War and subsequent problems of knowing you had a "Chalk Mark X" placed on your back by the enemies of the country you resided in.

RF Kops or not, they were out there "sniffing the air" to find those that covertly used the BBC as a means to spy on the locals - it is thru those efforts that we learned to use the IF frequencies more so as a means to spy on it's citizens and to detect and spoil those that were willing to destroy it's democracy or the freedoms the citizens enjoyed.

The BUZBY vans had curtains twitching back in the day,

and those antennas never could detect your TV's. It was scare tactics.

Thank you for that confirmation, we only know by what others are willing to tell the story of, aside from the Media trying to hide behind a curtain of "ignorance"...or "We didn't know" as a common answer from the upper echelons'.

What they did for "King and Country" ... Some were persecuted for the wrong reasons, others were wrongly persecuted for the RIGHT reasons.

So by your view, it was more of a matter of "intimidation" and those factors - but there is evidence they were able to "see" images the offending operator (the noise hiss) - which when you look back at the TV versus VCR and which was the better tuner - that idiom proves that what one watches is only piped thru on channel 3 or 4 (or their choice) - was was left to record at the VCR for watching later - is another.

Andy i never beleived they could detect your tv,
maybe if you live on a farm with no other tv around but not in a high rise block of flats where the whole building is full of tv's,

for the record i have always bought a licence,
its not worth the hassle of having Dickheads knocking on your door, even if they are collecting for JIMMY.

Interesting - because of this effect of IF leakage - we have a guarded band of 10MHz and other portions of the spectrums for the purposes of not to interfere with them, thru Commercial - Amateur, Government and otherwise.

The lack of enforcement, endorsement or testing for FCC, ITU or (Insert Lackadaisical RF-Agency Here) to validate and protect the consumer from themselves as of late, is why this conversation is even occurring.

I knew of the TV effect by simply turning on your shortwave receiver. Any TV like Zenith and such, while made in the US had to produce LESS than -60dB leakage of IF and LF noise from a given distance, else the TV antenna aerial can re-radiate the signal and interfere with other viewers and their systems - let alone the other TV stations that could get knocked out off-the-air drowned out by the offending TV. That offending chassis couldn't get FCC approval to be sold in the US if it didn't meet that certification.

We have emission regulations for electrical equipment or they don't get approved same as you guys,

but when BT launched home hubs sending broadband over your house wiring the bands went crazy with noise all across HF,I traced a few with the 817 & my 10mtr snoop loop,

I traced one offender right down to the plug socket near the front door that it was plugged into, lots of complaints,

The gubment told us that broadband for everyone was so important that they will decide what's acceptable, screw the regulations,

I think they revised the hubs on later versions.

When I saw that village in Wales claiming a £30 ancient Bush CRT TV that you could not give away 20 years ago was causing it, I went looking for antennas on Google,

I see a beam and a vertical but looks like FM broadcast antenna,

was it a faulty TV or was it a modified TV injecting some sparks into the mains from a disgruntled radio man,

they never went in the house to look due to covid.

Its not that difficult to mess with the system if they are ruining your hobby just because they don't want Ethernet cables.

one license covers all your receivers & most people do have a TV license.

Old folk over 75 got a free license up to recently when they scrapped it for anybody not on pension credit,

an extra 3.7 million households now have to pay the £157.50

TV's are not as noisy nowadays, big SONY trinitrons were the noisiest CRT TV's,
some plasma disasters were also bad news for radio especially if they did not use the ferrite loaded mains cable.

Its not that difficult to mess with the system if they are ruining your hobby just because they don't want Ethernet cables.

I've seen this before using a "PONG" TV game and re-wired the Splitter and Modulator to send the signal OUT the antenna - this happened back in the 70's to a local TV station that certain people just didn't care for.
