Spend the money once and get something nice…

Take a good look at the Icom IC-7300.

If that's out of your price range, consider the Yaesu FT 450D.

Don't forget the antenna!

I agree that the Icom 7300 would be a very nice HF rig.
If it was me and the 7300 was to many dollars I would shop around for a used Kenwood TS590SG. I've seen them listed fairly often for under a $1000.

Then next down from there I would go with fourstringburn's suggestion of a FT450D.

What about the new yaseu ft991/A. Might be another one to look at as well. Supposed to be a good radio and has it all. HF/50mhz/VHF/UHF. I like the Icom 7300 as well, but this could be another option.
