I watched a Fine Tune CB Shop video on a Radioactive modded (Mike) radio. He talked about how good the mod was then talked about some not so good things about the mod. When he opened the radio he never allowed the viewer to see inside it, just kept rambling about he wouldn't do this or that but never letting you see anything except his meters on the wall. Can't trust that. You see sinead readings but you never see probes on test points in any of his videos and he acts like it's some kind of space science. Mr. Carlson's Lab (Paul) no only shows you what is wrong and why it went wrong he'll show you the fix and he will design and etch a pc board and show the science. That guy at Fine Tune in my opinion is less a tech than Paul or Mike is.
Besides when I send in my smoke free radio I don't want to see some guy in a video blowing a big huff of vape across it.
Are there any over the air recordings of radios tuned by Paul or Mike (besides the recording I made of one of Mikes customers) so we can make an informed choice?
No videos I presume?Hahaha, I'm not a rookie, you're not going to rook me. I haven't seen anything in any fine tune videos that shows him doing anything except pushing buttons. When we hear him speaking on his rig he's in the same room as the recording microphone so how do I know if the audio is coming from a radio or is just picked up by proximity to the recording mic????
In the video I posted Paul figured out where the voltage loss was, showing his procedures, then figured out that antenna switcher, reverse engineered it, etched his own design, showing the viewer how it's done (fine tune is "hiding" his secrets I suppose lol lol lol) then Paul shows how to bias the P/A correctly reinstall the thermistors and using freq counters, current meters and voltage meters. Nothing to hide and no narcissistic bull crap.
Recorded by a third party. Real easy to do. Nobody seems interested in doing this. I wonder why?Hahaha, I'm not a rookie, you're not going to rook me. What is Mark hiding? Why does he not show himself with an iron in hand making a repair or resolving a "golden screwdiver's" screw up? All he says is "pay attention" then pushes buttons on his scope or sinead but no actual work. How about you point us in the direction of him actually doing work Mmm kay...
The problem is that YouTube consists of two types of techs.
Techs and those calling themselves techs.
There's no in-between. One cannot except items in the mail for repair and then come on this fourm (or any fourm) and ask questions on how to repair an item someone sent them. Or call, email, text ect a person who is indeed a technician so that they can be told what they need to do in order to repair a particular piece of equipment that was sent to them for the purpose of repair/refurbish.
It doesn't and shouldn't work that way.
A test center, oscilloscope and bench does not make a tech. I was lucky enough to find the tech that I use when I purchased a d104 off a gentleman in Texas. He turned me on to the guy that I've been using since day one. That was almost 3 years ago. After he did a couple of jobs for me I put his name out there for everyone else who like myself don't know the difference between a plate and an RF choke..
After that he got swamped. People began sending him things without even as much as an email. He's honest and even though he didn't speak with these customers or correspond via email or text he accepted the work he received (usually with a note taped to the item sent for repair) and sent the items back to those customer's repaired (after payment of course.)
That kind of left me having to wait a long time in order for my equipment to get fixed.
Forget about fixed, it took months for me to even be able to get in touch with him again.
His email box was full. His voice mailbox was overloaded everyday.
He found it impossible to read every email or listen to every voicemail, so I kind of got lost in the shuffle. No biggie.
I finally got a chance to speak to him and I know when I send him something it gets repaired and sent back in a timely manner. Me
Mentioning his name is doing anyone a favor. Others mention it several times a day in other post's.
Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to contact him if your not a customer who's already known to him.
I'm sure once he has cought up on everything he's got he'll begin to be able to except new customer's.
One must remember, he's a one-man show.
This is what he told me, 50-100 emails, and voicemails a day would be impossible for most anyone to contend with.
Everybody who's worked with him knows he's, honest, modest, and absolutely knows his way around any type of communications equipment. You won't catch any braggadocious comments, or delusional statements about modifications that will improve your receive by 5S units.
There's one thing I know for sure. There's no shortage of work on his bench.
And I hope that he continues to flourish. As long as he's working on equipment I know I have a professional to send my stuff to, even if I have to wait. Getting this type of equipment repaired correctly is a dying art form. Mostly everything I own glows in the dark. Even people with the knowledge to repair tube equipment, normally don't want to.
Whether it's an amplifier, transceiver, tube or transistorized he gets done right the first time.
In my opinion if there is anyone who has earned the title technician, it's him. Good luck to all 73. PS. It's difficult to do business with somebody for so long and not consider them a friend. Although I've never met him and probably never will, I do consider him just that.
