I had my first contact this morning with a fellow from Mississippi on 2m, and I was in Texas. I thought that was pretty cool, and apparently pretty rare.

Sounds like you caught a band opening with some tropospheric ducting between Texas and Mississippi.
Congrats on the first contact, I'm sure there'll be many more in your future....
Yaesu VX-8R with a Comet Dual Band antenna into a local repeater here in Texas. That repeater doesn't have IRLP, so he was also hitting it. He said he had a 50W radio connected to a vertical 2m antenna that was 70' in the air.
