with so many export radios out there why is there so few users use the fm side of the radio? heck most of us go to the low side of the band, so why not use the fm side as well?

the very few times i have used it i was amazed of the performance that it had. 25-30 miles with no problems and no linears were needed.

because its illegal.. well so are exports lol. in my area there's one export, mine. the next closest export is 20 miles away. there's 2 down there.

carl i am aware that it is illeagle but so is running the channles above or below the standard 40 but many in may area atleast do so.

the more i explore the other channels the more i concider getting my ham lic. still looking into it, the biggest deterants so far to me is i am not sure where to go to get the info i am looking for anf the fact that most hamers really come off as being really stuck up and rude to cb'ers.

all those channels and fm mode will still be of limits to you with a governmental approval certificate.

why is this? if i have a ham lic wouldn't i be premitted on them as a leagle operator?

i thought 10 meter weather am or fm would be the "starting" freqs since they are the closest to cb "11 meter" freqs.... am i wrong in this?

Go figure why it just doesn't seem to catch on

I've wondered the same thing about FM. Worked it on 10, lots of fun when the band opens up. Worked it between another station local on 11, lots of fun when the AM agitateros try to dead key you with no effect. For whatever reason it just doesn't seem to catch on.

If you get an amateur radio license, you will have access to the AMATEUR bands in accordance with what class of license you get. You do NOT get any access to CB channels or any other frequencies by virtue of having a ham ticket. With a Technician-class license, you do get access to 10 meters: SSB from 28300-28500 KHz, and some data and CW. The only FM on HF is found up at 29 MHz. Below that, you can use FM only if the modulation index isn't over 1.

VHF and higher is where FM is most often used.

As Mack suggested, check out the ARRL band plan.

thank you for the link, seems very confusing at first glance but it does break things down fairly simple. though still not sure i want to get my ham lic since i have a 10 meter radio but according to the chart (if i am reading it right) i could only talk on ssb which my radio does not have.

seems like every time i want to follow the rules and get even more involved in the hobby the more it seems it isn't for me.....

It's really not that hard to get a Tech license and then get the General License.
And with the General, you get a ton of frequencies to play with, along with a lot
of interesting modes to use as well. There will ALWAYS be hams that dislike CB'ers
and CB'ers that dislike hams. That is just the way it is. Just learn what you need to
know to get licensed and pass by the idiots and snobs. There are plenty of decent
people in both groups to talk with. Once you get going, you will get addicted to ham
radio. It is fun and interesting.

Been using FM here in Europe for years, much less likely to cause rfi it is also less susceptible to interference from surrounding electronics. its far from perfect mind, that constant hiss fries my nut. one benefit is you don't get retards here that have been superwhackpacked, but we do have no shortage of tards that have been superdeviationpacked.

for any semblance of a decent conversation on 11m both AM and FM are probably best avoided, SSB is the way to go, especially now, where SSB on the fcc frequencies has been legalised in some European countries, no doubt with more to follow. Hopefully after the olympics the UK will get its finger out the corporate pie and give the uk public what they've waited over 31 years for, legal SSB on 11m instead of their pishy FM system that wasn't compatible with any other outpost in civilisation,TORY WANKERS.
