I just ran across an announcement that the YAESU FT897 is no longer being manufactured and no new model will take it's place..interesting.

End of the line
for FT-897

CQ Ohm is reporting that production of the popular Yaesu FT-897D/DM/DS transceivers is to cease

They say there no immediate plans for a successor model.

It's really a niche market rig. Lots of folks using go-bags and pelican cases with the smaller 817ND and 857D instead, and batteries are getting smaller/better. I've seen some really cool hydrogen battery packs recently, and the technology is about to go crazy. With this new technology coming on the scene (ok, it's not new, but it's new to this type of application), things are about to change drastically.

It's a pretty nice "entry-level" all band, all mode rig but my guess is that the sales numbers have been dwindling due to the number of years it's been on the market and the amount of used rigs in the market place. It is also badly in need of a technology update when it comes to receiver performance and overall capabilities. I suspect that the 857D will continue to be available for a while until a newer, updated mobile rig is presented by Yaesu.

Still have the FT 100 including AM Xf, the forerunner of the 857/897 and in my view a better radio as well.
Same as my FT 847's with Collins filters Yaesu buy's parts from 3rd party suppliers and if they quit delivering or the parts become obsolete production stops.

They could have sold a whole batch of 847's if they had them, but no more parts, I keep mine as spare for the FT 2000-D that also went out of production.

Sign off the times we live in in the past a model could run 10+ years without much change, now 3 to 4 years seems to be the max.
Not that the new radio's are per se better, so I keep my old ones till they fall apart ;)

I always liked the FT-847 and actually have the FC-20n Tuner for that radio I use iton my Yaesu 857D it works with my 897 aswell but that rig has the matching LDG 897 tuner on it. I always liked the FT-100 aswell and have the original sale brochure in plastic but had seen most had issues so I never bought one and past up on a few good deals on them. I may eventually still try one. I was thinking about selling my Kenwood TS-50 and matching AT-50 tuner to get an 847 but wnt to do a little mo research on them.
