Galaxy DX959

I would not get the B version it has a lighted faceplate and is known to buzz.
I have the 939, and I noticed the faceplate was unplugged. I heard that noise when I plugged it in and immediately unplugged it. Simple fix to the noise. It is a great radio, but I wish it had the echo and SSB built in. I have also heard that the freq counter isn't a true reading counter but an "idiot light" channel display.

GrayGhost,

I noticed in reading through the thread that two very important questions had not been asked yet.

first, what is your budget for your setup? not just the radio, but the antenna, the mount, the coax, the SWR/wattmeter, etc...
I'm not asking you to state how much you have to spend publicly if you're not comfortable with that, but you should decide how much you are willing to invest at this juncture and then work within those boundaries for the best equipment possible.

there will ALWAYS be a radio that does the one thing yours doesn't if you only spend 50 more dollars. this holds true all the way up to 10,000+ dollar ham radios.

second question is how are you going to be using your radio?
just while driving? in town or on the highway?
sitting on a hill in the mobile trying to talk to far away lands?
Things like what type of vehicle you have and where you want to put your antenna are also big considerations.

If you can give us a few details about your plans, we can provide better help.

here is one tidbit. all of the Galaxy and RCI radios are very similar on the inside and only really differ in options, not performance.

LC

I will also say the uniden 980 with a RM Italy KL203 amp as that’s what I’m currently using. If I can hear them I can talk to them.

I think it’s now the default combination. Size, performance, and amp draw.

Add a DSP Speaker, and your buddies $500 radio (before speaker, antennas, microphone, mount, coax, jumper,, stud, power leads) just took a whuppin’ from your COMPLETE $500 system.

Hear. And get heard.

I actually have about $400 invested in my setup. 980 with the 203p a Tram triple mag mount and a Tram TBC 9 antenna. I had a predator 10k but it was stolen and I found the tram for $15 on Walmart.com!

Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to reply.
Guys I've been reading the forums and seeing all the conflicts
between different groups and people.I just think I'll skip getting back
into the hobby.
But thank you all for your time and help.

Hey buddy. Dont let the actions of others influence you not to enjoy what you like. I had the same feelings while listening to these knuckle heads over by me. But i enjoy using my radios to talk to my brother in law. We go to the range or fishing sometimes and talk on the way. Shoot the bull for hours sometimes. As far as the 959 goes, i like galaxys. My base is a galaxy 2547 which i think is a 959 with a power supply. Works good. I have a uniden 980 in my old pickup. Not a lot of money invested, but i do enjoy them when i use them.
