Think I am wrong same size as the Cobra 29


The new Galaxy Dx-86v is a simplified version of the Dx99v2 in a "Cobra 29/Galaxy Dx929" size chassis. The galaxy Dx86v also features a front 4 pin mic jack, AM/SSB, Backlit Starlite faceplate. It has the same power as previous Galaxy High Power(HP) models.

Does the Dx-86v have a connector on the back for an external frequency counter like the Dx-979? I'm guessing not since it already has the five digit on the front.

It does have SSB.

That must have been some very early literature he had then, because it clearly said AM only. Nice sized rig with SSB, no echo or roger beep. Yea!

I agree, nice radio.

It's been brought up already in this thread, I too wonder myself if these new SMT radios will be SSB stable like most other manufacturers have become in recent years?

We can only hope. I used to have a 2547 and a 959, and it wasn't so much that they drifted (they did), but they would be on a different frequency every other day. (Say 27.3847 one day, and 27.3857 the next). This was in a temperature controlled room, so there wasn't a lot of temp variance. I ended up getting rid of both rigs, and went to Magnum rigs, which I have never had any drift problems with. And then there's my old Grant XL's... wonderful rigs.

Buy a used old school cobra 148 GTL and channel it out......you don't need no stinkin export radios. No one uses FM on 11 meters.

My experience with these Galaxy radios concerning the drift problem is:

1) Caused by one or more xtals that are out of tolerance and need replacement - but all it takes is just one bum xtal to flub up the stability. Usually, it is the loop osc xtal most of the time, followed by the ref osc xtal some of the time. Rarely, both are foul. Unless it is getting old; then suspect both.

2) ExitThirteens remedy is also useful adjuct for better stablity: choose another varactor diode, like a Seimen's BB409 instead of the stock Sanyo SVC-251 (the loop osc varactor), and then remove the cap in parallel with the varactor diode. Or better still, get a varactor out of an old Uniden chassis - as a first choice. Then, re-tune the loop osc AM/USB/LSB. Might have a little less slide; but it does keep it tighter. Don't expect a cure; but a decent upgrade IMO.
