Galaxy full 10 Meter band

I have the Galaxy Dx- 95 T2 thats supposed to be a 10 meter radio. However it doesnt cover the entire band. I read that a 14.460 mixer crystal will replace the original X-3 13.56 crystal and enable greater frequency coverage on 10. However I have no source for these locally so I need to order this crystal from an internet source. This 14.46 crystal is supposed to be an original part for some radios so it should be available from oem parts somewhere.

I know that I'll have to re-align this rig but any other caveat's regarding this change ? May be better to just dump this radio in favor of something else? Thoughts ? Opinions ?

It's a glorified CB under the disguise of being a "10m rig".

RCI2970/50, Radioshack HTX10 + HTX100, and the President HR2510 are proper 10m rigs. Even the Magnum 257 still has the goofy channel skip, because it's set up for 11m.

Have you looked into the new RCI 2970DX model they will do about 200 watts they say more but 200 watts is plenty. The only problem is the price is in the same range as a nice used HF rig which is a better choice and better built rig but it depends what you yourself are after or want.

I own alot of radios and own a RCI 2970 along with a a few different 2950 chassis radios base and mobile alike and I love them. A better way to go would be to get a new model RCI 2950DX and use a seperate amplifier Texas Star DX400 or DX500 straight push button or without the variable there a clean amplifier and sturdy if ran correctly.

Ive run them from 10-12 meters and the staright push button non variable will take a hefty drive aslong as theres a fan on it I tell you this from experience and will also tell you that the DX500 will shoot the same output as the DX667 but cleaner. I also can tell you that a nice Uniden 2510 and a DX500 will walk the dog aswell and theres not alot of radios built that will match up to the 2510 performance on SSB and they hace a nice output wattage by themselves and with a chipswitch conversion you will get more radio to play with Just my 2 cents.

I had one. Drifts a bit on SSB - like most Galaxy radios do. Best to use on the interstate freeway while on ch.19/AM or ch.38/LSB when driving cross country or long distances.

It doesn't have repeater offsets or ctcss - even if you replace the crystal for that range. Much better off with a Magnum 257HP - that will go all the way to 29.965mhz and has offset freq capacity and ctcss tone. Fine little radio. Even though it has the CB type freq jumps instead of a continuous type VCO; it can be easily manually adjusted between the numbers for freq continuity.

I'll put in another vote for the HR2510. Had one for years and sold it, wish I still had it. That's a real SSB rig... and no silly CB channel display with 10 khz skips.
Harder to find lately but there's HTX-100's on ebay most of the time.

Yep I realise that this radio is nothing but a glorified CB. Its full of junk like echo and roger beeps and such but all of that is kept turned off.I've seen these 14.460 crystals on the net ranging in price from 10 to 20 bucks if they would let me order just one.I'll probably keep the Galaxy and play with it for a while, try to make something out of it.
I still have the FT2000 and AL1500 waiting for me when I get home.

Anyone know of a source for this 14.450 crystal? It has been used in a number of different Galaxy, Cobra , Connex and Ranger radio's.

Have you tried "International Crystal"? If they don't have one, they'll make anything you want.

I realise that International can make one but this should be an off the shelf part, no need to have it specially made. I just need a source to order one and only one.

I have a Galaxy DX2517 that is set up this way. It covers 26.965 to 29.665. It is also set up with an IX for soundcard modes, and I've run SSTV and PSK31 on it with good results. It makes an excellent dedicated 10 meter SSB and AM/FM simplex radio. It sounds so nice with the Astatic 10-DA-l microphone, lots of guys are surprised when I tell them I'm on a Galaxy export radio.

You might find that the power will be down a little the higher you go into 10 meters (even after alignment).

And do try to contact Galaxy as Jeff suggested. I did mine when Ray was still there, and he sent the crystal to my tech free of charge.

I talked to John at Galaxy tech support on the phone yesterday.He knew of this crystal mod and agreed thats its a worthwhile upgrade. He directed me to a couple of third party parts suppliers to order the crystal. So I've ordered the crystal from a supplier in a nearby city and I hope to have it by the end of the week.
John also informed me that the re-alignment that is said to be needed after the crystal change is not as involved as some would have me to believe. If there are no other problems with the rig before the crystal change then only the 3 mixer cans will need to be tweaked. These are basicly the tank circut for the mixer oscilator and they need to be brought back to resonance to function again after the crystal is swapped out.
All is looking up at this point. Now if I could only find a way to swap out the stupid echo unit for a VoX board life would be good.

Its now 24 hours later and the new 14.46 MHz crystal arrived about an hour ago. It was a simple matter to put it in in place of the original 13.56 MHz peice. taking only a half an hour after getting the covers off.All that was needed in the way of alignment was to tweak the 3 coils, L20-21-22 sligtly, only abour a quarter of a turn down, and the little rig was right back on frequency. The tuning range now is about 1 meg higher, going from 26 to 29.5 something so it was a worth while improvement for me.

Comments about glorified CBs

Comments about glorified CBs are interesting. Galaxy's are made for a specific market with specific features. Putting something down because it can't work beyond its design specification is rediculous. It's like complaining that a Lamborghini doesn't have a 4'inch lift kit and so its a glorified sports car that can't do much but stay on the blacktop. You want something that does 10meters like a HAM rig supposed to then go get it. But if you want CB features along with 10m potential then Galaxy's are great. I appreciate those who work with the rig to make it more to their liking, but to call a Galaxy a glorified cb is terribly insulting to those who appreciate CBs. Who wouldn't want the best of anything they are into?? Thes sad thing about the "HAM attitude is summed up in the following: Don't forget you HAMs are nothing more than AMATEURS. I come to this forum to learn about radios, and what I find happening is that HAMs are enthusiastic about feeling special over CBers, QSLs are like bragging rights, knowing about some BS new feature that no one else has is like a competitive edge in the hobby. Competition is good, but conceited attitudes prove your Amateurish existence. So sad.:thumbdown:
