Is it all for display or do you have the knowledge of how to actually use all of this stuff? If I had the knowledge I for sure would invest is a much better wattmeter for a test bench & use the one you have ONLY for an SWR Meter & then only on 10 thru 12 meters.

Thanks Six-Shooter, I would like a chance to respond to that.

When I started out, electronics was my passion. That is why I went to DeVry in Dallas, TX in the degree program. Came out and worked at JSC in Houston for about 11 years in the Shuttle Mission Simulator facility. The only thing is... I only worked about 8 of it in hardware. It was discovered that I have an affinity for software as well so I wound up switching horses and got in to the operating systems internals group. One thing led to another and I wound up leaving the space center and joining the computer company whose computers we had used. Spent 18 years with them until the severe change in the computer marketplace got me laid off. I then shifted over to Java development where I sit at this moment.

All that....was just for background.

I'm not AT retirement.... but it isn't all that far away either. As I get on... I have had a real itch to get back into my electronic roots. I loved it when I was in DeVry and I miss it. So I decided to start following a path in that direction.

I love tube guitar amps, and have always loved radios. I still have a lot of the common electronics knowledge from my education... it is all still there. Scopes? Used them for many years. The rest, I am doing the hard way.... learning as I go. In March I bought that spectrum analyzer at a hamfest and on that day... I understood the role it played but had absolutely NO idea how they worked or what you did with them. So I studied... I've asked questions on forums... and now, feel that I can use it. Radio technology? Well...I have always "understood it" from a theoretical position... I've just never had any practical experience. So, once I get this bench finished, I have got a stack of about 8 radios that are in varying degrees of working (or NOT working!!!). I intend to take each one, apply what I know to find the problems, implement the fixes, perform the maintenance (thinking re-caps here!) and learn to do it the old fashioned way.

Do I know it all? The correct short answer... not yet. Am I actually learning? Absolutely. I dig deep for "concepts" to be sure that I understand what I am doing.... NOT just doing it because "the YouTube video said to!". Beyond that, I hope I learn forever. There is always something new. When I learn it...I'll offer it to others... as so many others (INCLUDING on THIS board) have offered to me.... to keep the hobby and the technology alive.

And I didn't write all this because "my feelings were hurt"! Not at all. I really honestly want people to realize that I am serious. Having fun???? ABSOLUTELY!!!! But serious about doing it. Do I have the capability? I think so.

And I couldn't agree more about the wattmeter. That is just what I have at the moment. As time and money allow, I'll upgrade.

In the end... I'm just another guy having fun in a hobby/pursuit I love. Thats all!

Have a great day... 73

I was not trying to hurt your feelings I just know that a lot of people collect stuff including test equipment that they do not use or don’t know how to use and some of them collected hoping to learn how to after purchasing the items.Have fun and I hope you become an Expert and make great use of all of that gear.

No SIR!! I did not take it that way!!!!!!!!
I was smiling typing all that in.
As you suggest, I know there are many who dig in to radios and have very little idea what they are doing beyond what it says in the "secret CB" volume they dug up!!!!

That was all entered in good spirit!!! I want to be one that actually learns what is going on, how the circuits work (already do know a fair bit of this) and what various pieces of equipment do and why we use them.... not just HOW !!!

Thank you and a pleasant evening to you!!!

Bob

“As a Secret CB Volume owner, sir, I salute you!”

Said neither tongue-in-cheek nor in jealousy of those whose ability will always outmatch mine in this.

“Radio” is flat fascinating. CB is the excuse.

Bothers me not a whit I remain near the beach while some can swim the English Channel. Drink in hand, water to my armpits, it’s enough.

You’ve interested readers for what you post.

Hmm.. sounds like you and my brother may have crossed paths. He drove 100 mi. a day (round trip) working down there. He worked for a mainframe contractor then jumped to BMC and cut his drive time down to 1/2)

Almost forgot the other reason for posting: "The best meter you can own is the one you can afford to have - and use.." (y)
