Giant Screwdriver Antenna

I hate the taste of feathers, but it looks like I'm gonna have to eat a few because of that picture. When I looked at the one on Breedloves web site I can see how I made the mistake of thinking it's been 'photoshopped'. It hasn't been. There had been just enough loss of resolution with the 'copy/paste' to this forum to make the gap between the top 'cylinder' and the bottom 'cylinder' blend enough to 'disappear'. The 'spoiler' doesn't 'blend' but actually goes in front of the antenna through that 'gap'. I'm still not sure what is being reflected in the glass to make the window appear to stop before getting to the driver's side of the car, but in the original picture you can tell it's a reflection. Rats! Wrong again.
I got an excuse thought! I wasn't wearing my glasses last night. Of course, at the distance between me and the monitor I don't need them...

once you get around them feathers, crow ain't that bad...

Good eye Doc. ;) That is exactly the case. I didn't look at the original until reading your last post and you are correct. It has not been Photoshopped at all and it is simply the camera angle and the gap that makes it look wrong. (y) As for the feathers, I use them to pick the little pieces of crow out from between my teeth when I am finished.

What's the point of this giant antenna on a mobile if its supposed to be 60' in the air ?

Who said it is supposed to be 60 feet in the air? Someone said it would work better if it was that high due to the coax cable being the main radiating part but some of that statement is sarcasm. Not all, just some. Any antenna works better the higher it is and mobile antennas are no exception.

As for antennas, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I would not run that antenna,it looks like my vehicle should be running on wood or coal, but I would run a Texas Bug Catcher or a HiQ screwdriver type without batting an eye. Some people think my "little" 9 1/2 foot homemade mobile antenna with its 4 foot lower shaft made of fiberglass wound with coax braid and covered with heatshrink and topped with a 5 1/2 foot whip is unsightly. My wife is on that list.

Interesting, HiQ has changed their website a bit. I don't see all the user pictures that used
to be there. There was a corvette that had the 6 inch diameter antenna on the back, looked identical to the one in this post. HiQ's are 6 foot tall and 6 inches in diameter.
On the back of that vette, talk about odd looking. That particular model is $1300, but I guess if you're a serious ham, it's only money. It's less expensive than a crank up tower. :)
