Okay, so to quote myself from the post above I said "negative bias on pins 5 and 9".

That means the NON-banded end of the diode goes to the tube socket pin, along with the negative side of that filter cap.

Pin 11 is different. That's the one that gets the positive voltage.

Alright I went ahead and added the protection diode as you suggested.

The thing seems to have cheered up for the time being, that grid short seems to not be happening right now. However I do not have any reason to keep trusting that tube. I will try to replace it.

What would you say is a reasonable fuse size for it? The one I took out was, I think based from what's left of it, a 20 amp fuse. That sound about right?

An amplifier that size wants to draw nearly the limit for the outlet circuit's house breaker. 15 Amp should be good unless it becomes a nuisance, blowing out when there's no fault.

Could be why it had a 20 in it.

Power cord will be some really stout stuff, like number 4.

How many tubes are in this one?

I have seen several models of "Golden Falcon" tube-type base-station amplifiers.

Don't ever remember seeing a mobile amplifier with that name. But the part of the cabinet in the pic sure looks like a Golden Falcon. The usual way of feeding DC power to this kind of amplifier would be a large threaded stud with a nut on it, one for positive and one for negative.

Top view I have a question see the red I believe it's from the high low switch and I dont know where it goes

The threaded post at the upper-right corner in the pic with the red insulator is the positive DC-power input. The bolt at the opposite-lower corner is the negative ground connection.

Have you had a look at the fuse to see that it's not blown?
