GOLDENROD 45

Sticker Shock.
Ask Marconi, I think he or his Dad used to run one of them.
Made by signal engineering I think.
Always thought that it be too easy to tear the horizontal loops off on something but I have never seen one in real life.

I had one a few years ago it worked very well until it got stolen. You won’t go wrong buying in it compairs equally to the 17”shaft 10K I replaced it with.

You have got to love the "3 times power gain" claim in a 56 inch loaded 1/4 wave that can only have a negative gain rating as compared to a 1/2 wave dipole.

I’ve had one twenty years. The 1970 Chrysler to which it was attached is long gone, though.

Also ran it on a mag-Mount on the roof of our XJ Cherokee’s. Too tall to be practical, but it would get out with a Uniden 76 running Connex dual finals (how the upgrade was phrased).

directional on a mobile may be alright if stationary. Not really sure how directional it is or the flat side claims. Would like to know more about this antenna as I've been looking at them as of late.

and they are on ebay.

That’s nothing more than a cap hat on a loaded coil. It's still a vertical antenna because of the vertical mast is part of the radiating side of the antenna. The antenna will still perform mostly as an omni directional vertical because the RF currents are still forced upward.

A well designed cap hat is the best thing to put on a shortened loaded antenna because it cancels much of the inductive losses in the coil which means less coil is needed for a given frequency.

I wouldn't want a closed loop cap hat because it could become a tree branch snagger on a high profile vehicle like a truck. I prefer radial spokes.

Here is my cap hat on a screwdriver antenna.

Here is the go to man for mobile radio info, K0BG's home brew cap hat.

Look kind of similar to the Golden Rod?

Do they make a device that you can attach that won’t let you drive off without that monstrosity being dismounted? If not, that should be an aftermarket accessory. Some of us old farts need reminders, not to mention fast food drive thru accessibility. To me, that’s strictly a portable antenna, not for mobile use. I don’t have any problems with a dipole tossed up in the trees at some park, plus dipoles are a lot cheaper. True, it takes little more effort to install one, but that's half the fun for the same if not better signal.

When the antenna is mounted at or near ground level, the ground reflections force the signal up into the vertical plane even when the element is horizontal.

Next week or so I’ll be home for my monthly stop. Mine is Signal Engineering circa 1998. Pics? Dimensions?

I’ve joked I might mount it on the Pete at the pass side door mirror with a TOP GUN TEC mount.

Never have used one of those hear some good things about them.. I would love to find the build plans for Signal Engineering old base antenna Goldenrod 180S Had 3 of them until Jan 3 2000 granted they were only 1/2 wave But at 50 feet to the feed point I could hear stations the most of the others couldn't hear

It isn't 56 inches long electrically though as it has a capacity hat which will make it appear electrically longer than its physical length.
