A weapon is just a chunk of metal unless it is fully loaded at all times and on one's person as same.
The gun is only unloaded when I'm cleaning it. It is a tool designed to aid me in protecting my family and is a useless chunk of steel and polymers when it's unloaded.
It is stored in a thumb print safe. I press my thumb or my wife presses her thumb on the pad and the safe opens.
My 11 year old daughter is a decent shot with her .22, but has a hard time with the recoil from the 10mm. My son is 1 and will be shooting when he can hold the gun safely. Kids get curious about guns, and there is two things you can do about that curiosity. Tell them to stay away from it and try to keep it away from them, or take them shooting to allow them to vent their curiosity. I go for choice number two.

I carry a loaded pistol. I have 2 others that are loaded in the house. I have several more that can be loaded rather quickly. Everyone in my family know how to use all of them. Yes, we have safety measures, mostly when other kids and tenderfoots visit.
Guns have been our family for many generations. God willing, it stays that way. God Bless America!
There is a rather unfortunate federal statute that prevents me from carrying at work, but I carry when I'm not at work, and my wife has fired several thousand rounds from the Glock and her Walther. She is a hell of a shot and not nervous at all with either weapon. I feel much better about being gone all week knowing she has access to and is trained on both my gun and her Walther. She carries all the time. 5'1" and all of 100 lbs and she is no easy target for some scumbag.
