Has anyone ever used one of the heil replacement elements for the D104? I see they make these and was wondering how well they work? The D104s are geting hard to come by as we all know and alot of the ones that I come acrost have bad elements. I see some guy is selling replacement ones on ebay but I figure the heil is probly better. If anyone has tried the ones on ebay I would also like to hear how they worked becouse some of the locals are just looking for new elements.

i bought one of those cheap replacments from ebay and it never worked. i wish i could tell you how it sounded but i had around 5% modulation with it. its also quite a bit smaller than the origional.

i would keep looking for a mc 320 element or try the heil element.

Cheech,

I did the conversion for my D104 and it works great! I'm using the HC-5 element. The instructions for the conversion come with the element when you buy them from Heil. Its a real simple straight forword modification. If you can cut a piece of cardboard and solder two wires you'll be fine.

Just don't get the HC-4 unless you really understand what it sounds like....it can cut glass. Miserably sharp audio.

DX'ers Dream is a misleading name.

It's the Intentional Interference LID Operator's Pileup Destroyer element. So annoying that the DX will answer you just to get you off their frequency so you'll stop keying on top of everyone else as they try to complete the contacts.

I guess you could say I hate that element.

Yeah the HC-4 is harsh. That being said, it was designed exactly for what you have described, bust thru and be heard which is advantageous in a DX contesting situation. The HC-5 is the more mellow rag-chew type element. Some of the Heil mics come with both elements to switch between based on what type of contact you are intending to make. The Heil site has recordings of the differences between the two.
