HELP ME UNDERSTAND ? MAN WRECKS CAR IN REVINE ?

I've heard the story and have only read a little but IM still a little confused on this one ? He wrecked his car and was in a revine for a week , story read that he caught fish with his bare hand to eat to survive and drank water from his shoe ? then it wrote that he used a small pocket knife to cut his seat belt and crawl from the wreakage to his freedom ? Was there broken bones ? Why did it take a week to use his pocket knife ? catching fish with his bare hand to eat ? using a shoe to drink water ? I must really be missing something here when it comes to this story ? If I don't get some more info of this ? Something surely sounds fishy to me here ? What's really going on ?
