Thanks for your response. Because I want to keep my little device very simple, I would preferr not to have to change channels at all. So while the FRS band looks good, it is not ideal. What about all the little devices like key finders, and remote control car door locks. They don't appear to have the distance I need, but I am wondering what type of signal they use? What about wifi with a bigger antenea attached?

Naferious...that made me laugh pretty hard. I am being a little bit vague because I have an idea for a product that I kind of want to keep under the hood. If you knew what I was really going to use this for you would laugh also. It is about as far away from nafarious as you could imagine.

I don't see why this would be so hard. As you say, there are FRS radios that are wrist watch size. If I take away the screen, volume control, mic, and everything else that I don't need, it would seem not only feasible but easier to make than an FRS radio, and smaller, with less battery needs.

OK. If you have more ideas keep them coming. And thanks everyone for your help and entertaining comments.

Great idea about the wire. Come to think about it, I now figure I can just yell across that distance. Problem solved!

But what about the technology that wireless home phones use? Those are secure. Could I use that type of frequency?

home wireless phones usually aren't reliable at distances of 50' or more unless you use some sort of amplifier which would require a license and FCC approval for use above and beyond the devices original intended use.

They're kinda funny about things like that.

You need one of those wireless buzzer things that fine dining establishments like Olive Garden use.

Thanks for your responses about the phone network. I can't use any type of computer based system. It has to be portable, battery powered, and small.

Thanks for that idea about the restaurant paging system. I am going to look into that much more. It does sound ideal. I will have to look into the distance it will work.

I have been looking at these little keyfinder items.
Wireless 2-Way Find One Find All Key Finder, Wallet Finder - Keyfinders with Feedback

I wonder if I could adapt that for more distance?
