HF + tuner + Wilson Antenna

Guess the 5000 has to go in the dump.
i did find this seems accessible/acceptable.

SRC 8010 HF Mobile

I have my doubts about how well that is going to work, as well. You can certainly have fun with it on the higher bands, but for the cost of a tuner + antenna, you can just buy a small screwdriver antenna and stop messing around.

If you are still talking about the Wilson 5000 I vote none of the above. In no way would i run a Wilson 5000 with a tuner for all band HF operation. The base loading coil will overheat due to very high RF current on the lower bands and may even arc between turns on some bands if the RF voltage gets too high. In general, roof mounted antennas are not the way to go when using a tuner for the manner the you want to use it.
Search Google for HF mobile operation and see what people are using and check what they have to say about it.

then to take the 5k out of the setup and use a 102 SS whip.. it has no coils will it arc too?

will a LDG tuner work good with a Wilson 5000 roof mount ? will it tune 160-6m? would it be better to get a ham stick?
the Wilson is currently resonate @ 27.900.00 it is NOT wide banded:wink:

Don't forget that the tuner is only changing the SWR (match) between the antenna output on the radio and the tuner. The mismatch still exists between the tuner and antenna. So like the other guys have already said an antenna that small is pretty much worthless on 20m and below and probably pretty sad on 15 meters. Then again you probably don't need the tuner on 10 or 11m.

Yup. I no longer do hf in the mobile.
I run hf on the base and vhfuhf in the mobile.

That's too bad Morse. There's fun to be had in the mobile. Pick a favorite band and run a hamstick or two or three. I did that b4 I bought the Tarheel II and it works fine, no tuner needed. Just run a nice magnet mount and screw in the band stick you feel like running. I always liked 17m during the day and 40 or 75 in the evenings and night. Doesn't take very long to change. Downside is carrying the extra antennas. But you can mark the whips or cut to bottom out and quickly take them apart for easier transport. You can buy about six hamsticks for the price of a Wilson 5000. Just a thought.

I think you have lots of time to 'play' with radio and there are lots of things you can do with it. Being -able- to do mobile radio is nice, but certainly not that important in the over-all scheme of things. Who says you have to do that 'right now'? Enjoy what you can for now and do the other later.

I used to do HF mobile when I was on the road a lot, including 80m, but not now. I used to travel 1/2 hr each way to work and often my job took me on 1 1/2 - 2 hr trips one way so HF was a way to pass away the miles. Now that work is four minutes from home I hardly have time to make a single CQ before it's time to get off the air. I still slip the FT-857 into the vehicle when I go camping however.

It was more the fact that having my ic-7000 in the mobile was a huge risk of being stolen by thief's. We have a lot car breakins and have had ham gear stolen and I just couldn't do the sleepless nights worried my radio would get stolen anymore. + working HF is much more fun at home where I have 100% focuse on filtering and other important settings that is hard to do while driving especially here in California. I can settle for vhf uhf in the mobile because I mostly do vhf uhf chatting mobile then I did HF. The Wilson 5000 did a wonderful job tuning 10m-20m. The Wilson is boxed up and will be replaced with a diamond nr22l since the mount for the Wilson since empty on my mobile. 73s

P.s I may get another 706mk2g to run mobile again, but for the time being ill use the kenwood tm-d710a.
