WHY do hams INSIST in saying "Hi Hi" and "Fine business" on phone???? I mean C'mon guys, would you say it in person in front of some hot chick you just met when she cracks a funny joke???? Seriously, two of the DUMBEST things i have ever heard said on the radio in my life....

Hi Hi is just carry over for a lot of guys that work Cw, and Fine business is just a habit...... I have done the same with out even thinking about.....it just becomes a way of talking on the radio.
There are worse things you can do on HF lol.

The same reason Q-codes are used on phone, designed for CW but migrated and now generally accepted on phone. My elmers shuttered when ever they heard Q-code or phonetics on phone.

I never say hi hi on phone or CW. I just plain laugh, giggle or chuckle. On CW, I will usually say "ha ha".

I never say FB on either mode either. I don't see anything wrong with saying fine business on CW, but I cringe when people say "hi hi" and "FB" on phone.

The biggest thing that burns my goat is operators trying to sound cool by using Adam -12 phonetics. I will not answer CQ's from ops that do, even if it's desireable DX.

I only use standardized phonetics.

But that's just me and many people call me an ass.

Another ass I find amusing:

Same hear, I never use Q's on phone. It's just plain wrong. Though, I do use phonetics for weak signals or hearing challenged hams on phone.

While were on the subject...

My biggest gripe is people that don't understand how to give a proper signal report.

Now I feel like Earl Pitts.

Wake up, America!

Pitts off.

A few weeks back on 10M I received a "7/8 +20 pounds" from 9 land.

Truth revealed about ham radio - YouTube

Well you are half right. Burt, K1OIK, is indeed an ass but he is not amusing. He is quite the arrogant self righteous asshole and those are his good points. *Don`t do it*

Don't worry about being a nerd, Jeff. I think that those that Twit are twits. I think that those who live for Facebook need to remain faceless. Maybe we can figure out what it is to 'Zoosk'; still don't know. The nerds have conquered, the evidence is all around us, and it is only all too obvious any more.

This Bert/K1OIK dude has made a number of viddys for FlexRadio. But I think that viddy of his on this page is OK. I don't agree with everything he said; but I think he pointed out some of the absurdities of Ham radio. There are more. Yet he is still a ham and sells FlexRadios. That is ironic too. But Americans have gotten fat because of the computer; not Ham radio. He missed that one completely.

One of the points he made was valid. Ham radio does serve a public interest - emergency communication. But if Bert would have his way, we wouldn't have that. Just because there isn't an emergency now doesn't mean that Hams cannot use radio in the mean time and busy themselves with improving their gear and radio skills. So that one day they may well be needed. Katrina, tornadoes in AL last year, tsunami in Japan, and so on - proved that Hams/Ham radio does have a real value.

We can loaf on the radio in the mean time and thank God that our communities aren't in any clear and present trouble. Maybe Bert needs a hurricane or a powerful Northeaster storm hit his little comfortable MA community so as to remind him of what having a license and the responsibility it brings with it has.

In the mean time Bert, I sure hope that wasn't your best comedy schtick. I'll let you know when you are funny; you aren't there yet. But what you said needed to be let out so that what was said could be vetted. Don't quit your day job - if you know what I mean. Humor is based upon irony; and he did mention some ironic things. But a lot was lost in his delivery - that could have been funny - is all . . .

What Burt really needs is a reality check and come down off his high horse and remember that he is in fact human as well. I had to laugh the time he chastised a poster on QRZ that was berating his videos. He was questioning the guys intelligence due to misspelling a word and stated that all his fifth graders knew better than that. What the idiot failed to realize was that while criticizing the guys spelling he made two spelling errors of his own. Of course he was having issues with his keyboard at the time and never made any real mistakes.
