A while back tx star got busted by Bbi using fake Toshiba 2879 transistors, Lesters custom also offers the Chinese Toshibas as an upgrade.

What do we know about the source of these parts and what about the performance?

I remember that. Those fake Toshibas were actually not too bad according to most sources that have played with them.

Yes, but it was a specific batch of fake Toshiba 2879's........
They had a manufacturer code stamped on them of " 6J " .......
Don't know where they came from......
In my experience with them, they were more robust, performed better, and internally constructed much better than the HG transistors...... very close in internal construction to original Toshiba's.......

This seller on the fleabay has the 6-j code pictured and decent feedback https://www.ebay.com/itm/1351621951...pid=5336136228&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1

I may have to risk a few $ and try some. The great Hg 2sc2879c has left me wanting more, I prefer their standard 16d08

Yeah, well be careful about that.......
What the seller is showing in the photos and what is actually being shipped are not the same markings......
I would suggest you contact the seller to verify that the shipped product is exactly stamped as what is pictured for sale......

Are you interested in some brand new, old stock, original Toshiba 2SC2879 transistors ? ....... Not cheap though like all the HG's and other China made knockoffs.....

A lot of people are very hapyy with the HG2879 16D08. They are not perfect, and not as durable, and do not make the power but the price is good. You just have to operate them like a sane person not your average idiot! If you try to push the voltage or drive like some would on the Toshiba they will pop like Snap Dragon in the hands of a 11 year old boys hands!

They are not designed, constructed or made from the same materials etc....Electricaly different device! They are close enough to keep the illegal amp industry alive and MFJ alive. Good enough to keep repairing old gear. Penta Tubes are not Tesla, GE, Phillips, Sylvania, RCA, Svetlana etc.........Good enough!

I am reminded of many of my fellow Army Brats Korean Mom's "Same-Same, Different!" that is not meant as an insult or negative in any way either it was pretty common. If you reload it would be like IMR4350 vs H4350.

I am not sure anyone knows who is making HG transistors but we do have a point of contact that has not changed since day one. They have a lot of products and you can contact them directly. I have talked with the "owner" and I use that title lightly. On the other hand who do you contact for counterfiet Toshiba's? What other products does "Fake Toshiba" offer in the market place. No idea how you contact "Fake Toshiba". Can I call China or Taiwan and talk with them?

I am not a fan of HG hi-jacking the model nuber of famious obsolete transisters like 2879,1446,454,2290, 1969 etc.......I am glad they did not copy company names and tradmark and they where smart enough not to put "2SC" in front of them or MRF or ST etc......

I am not keen on documentation or lack there of of all the vartiations they have spun up until they got close enough to call it good. I am very happy that they will work with people and continue to spin up new version for continous improvment!

The Toshiba 2SC2879 is not the only bipolar RF transistor upon which amps are built. People focus on it too much given the insane price they go for now and the lack of them in the market place. The good old days are gone and are not comming back. Make the best of what we have. We are darn lucky to have the HG parts inspite of how lacking they are compared to Motorola, Toshiba, ST, Macom parts!

The 2879 was designed to monopolize the 100-watt transistor HF market in 12 volt equipment. It's price point and durability made that goal very easy to achieve. They literally destroyed Motorola's market in just a few years. Mobile HF radios are still using 12 volt 100 watt transistors and the problem is the CB market never kept up with them.

Mitsubishi now owns the market that Toshiba abandoned. They even manufactured one 12 volt bipolar transistor with more collector dissipation than the 2879! It's not rocket science to match their input and output impedances yet, the CB market is the complete void of them.

This one looks interesting, and about the only bjt that I see.

Fine print says only if the heat sink is held somehow to 25 degrees C.

Graph shows about half that dissipation with 600 square cm of heat sink with the ambient temp at 25 C.

Still a rough tough-rated part if you can find it.

The datasheet for the Toshiba 2SC2879 also says that its maximum specifications are provided at 25° c. This is fairliy common albeit, impractical to achieve. The Mitsubishi part is still easily found online for sale. Some places have it priced very economically too.

Ranch 55,
What do you have red dot or non red dots. How much are you asking for? Feel free to message me. Thanks.

Chris

I have often wondered why someone running in the competitions didn't make a dry ice cooled box. That would keep the transistors WAY under 25 centigrade.
Call them "Superconductor Boxes"
