HI all i'm wanting a 27 mhz ground Indepenendent antenna as i can't get enough good metal ground plan on my ute and getting bad swr . have looked on USA ebay and can't find them would have thought there would be lots as usa still uses 27mhz alot on there trucks that are fiber glass cabs and use mirror mount antennas too. OR is base load antenna is whats the yanks call ground independent antenna as i see a lot of 27mhz base load antennas on USA ebay thanks. john

Jeep has a similar problem, so 4WD forums and Jeep-specific forums may offer advice or clues.
The first antenna mount I used on my Dodge pickup was a hood mount which used existing fender bolts to attach and then extended outwards. It was about good enough to talk across the highway, but not much else.
I didn’t use but a 5’ antenna, today would try 7’ if that was my only choice.
Bumper-attached antennas are most of what I see for “serious” or expedition off-roading. Now we’re at the other end of the spectrum in expense and difficulty than a low-price CB rig.

Thanks for the info but i think a ground INDEPENDENT antenna best way out for me
In the states we call it No Ground Plane antennas. Or NGP

A NGP just uses a special coax as the ground plane. Ya it gets the radio happy and it's better then nothing but the performance will never match a proper antenna system. With NGP you have to use their whole kit.. mount , special coax, special antenna. You can't just slap a whip on your existing mount and coax and call it good.

In the late 66 when I worked mobile only, I typically had a 102" whip on the bumper and it was directional but effective.
Agreed, K0BG website has loads of good useful mobile info.
The No Ground Plane systems are fairly inefficient, range is usually pretty short. There are ways to get a workable setup even if you don't have much sheet metal.
