Using a mixer can be done; but it sure wouldn't be my first choice. What else do you need to mix in? Ans: nothing. So, it's primary use is wasted except for the fact that it can act as a mic preamp. But I prefer to use a real dedicated rack-type mic preamp (Behringer 2200) and mic. I have a dedicated rack-type EQ too; but since I run a high-quality condenser mic I do not need to alter the EQ on the mic. Kinda useless - really. Most high-quality condenser mics need almost NO EQing. Running a poor quality mic will need an EQ; but even then I wouldn't count on any fantastic changes for the better. Your Heil mic should be OK. Always remember the audio rule: crap in; crap out.

A mixer's primary job is to blend many sound sources into a single output. Their EQ and mic preamps are of minimal quality and are best if they do not add to the 'noise floor'. The W2IHY is a unit dedicated for radio use. Not 'studio gear' by any means. But it will work fine. Rack gear is not made for radio. However, you can use it and will have better sonic quality. Behringer gear isn't what I'd call the 'pinnacle of audio quality'; but it will work better than using a mixer or a W2IHY box. But they all will work.

Well the whole idea is to enhance your audio out.....or what is the purpose of having this equipment?

I would still ask questions....I like as much input from others as possible...I read a little then look at equipment. :)
 
I ordered my mic last sunday online from universal radio....the page said the item was in stock....I called today and they said that they just came in today...and that it would prolly be shipped monday.....it sucks when they say something is in stock and it isn't.....they are not that far from me....should have got it within 3 days instead of 2 weeks :(
 
OK....I now have the Heil HM-12 and the Heil CC-1-Y cable with the ptt jack on it.....what do I need to connect it up to a mixer and to my radio....the cable is 4 pin xlr on one end for the mic and 4 pin yaesu on the other....it will plug directly into my Galaxy but the audio is not very strong.

Don't think you can use the CC-1-Y unless you hack it for the mic connector. Your going to have to have a 4 pin xlr from the mic to a 3 pin xlr or a phono plug to connect the mic to the mixer. A cheap audio cable works fine for that, just add a 4 pin XLR to the mic end. Then you need a cable from the mixer out to the input of a device similar to the W2IHY iBox to convert the line audio to mic level audio and a cable from the output of the interface to the Galaxy. For the iBox that would be a 5 pin din to a 4 pin mic plug.

If I were you I'd order the iBox Kit and a generic interface cable.

Look at the picture I posted on the 2nd page of this thread. It shows exactly what you need and the cables involved. The only thing diferent is the 3 pin xlr on the studio mic vs the 4 pin you have to have for the Heil mic.

I saw that coming. Should have said something. The problem you are having with low audio output is caused by the fact that you don't have a preamp between the mic and the radio. Can't do it with 4 pin mic plug; as 'balanced' audio gear uses 3 pin XLR plugs. BTW - you would be better served with a dedicated mic preamp than a mixer. They cost about the same too - about~$100 or less. Dedicated mic preamps have better gain than the typical mic preamps found in mixing boards. Unless you get a $40k mixing board; and I'm sure your budget won't allow for that!

You might be better off by converting the 4 pin mic plug/wiring to a 3 pin mic XLR. But then, you would have to dump the new mic you have and get a XLR plug type mic. All pro mics use this format.

If/when your cable is converted to a 3 pin XLR at the mic end of that cable, then it can plug directly into a preamp. Then you need ANOTHER standard XLR to XLR mic cable to attach the mic to the preamp. That is how I set mine up, along with many others that do it the very same way.

Eastside, that is not a low impedance mic nor is it a balance xlr.
The impedance on that mic is 1000ohm, most ham radios "usually"
are 250-600 which is still low impedance. Two of the pins on the four that go into
the mic are pin 2, audio, pin 1, audio ground, pin 4 I believe is the ptt and pin 3 is the
ptt ground. I'm not really sure what a cb radio like for impedance input. With the mic gain turn all the way up, even in the radio is it still low on audio? There's some $49 preamps made by ART that you can usually pick up from a guitar store that have balanced and unbalanced input and output. That model has a impedance matching switch, button, that will set the mic match to 600 ohm. With that in mind use 1/4 inch mono plugs from the mic using the Heil cable you got or make your own, though I haven't seen any four pin style xlr ends at the guitar shops that I have around me. You can simply take off the four
pin mic connector and remove the pin two and one from the mic connector. That would be the audio and ground for the mic. Leave the pin 3 and 4 on the four pin connector to the radio as that's the PTT and ground and make sure it's going to the right connectors for that radio. Solder the audio and ground to a 1/4" mono connector, audio center pin and ground to sleeve. That way you hook up the 1/4 to the mic preamp input. From the output just get a decent shielded 1/4 to 1/4 mono cable from the guitar store while you're there at what ever length you might need to make it even with the Heil cable or longer. Cut off one end of the 1/4 cable and then wire the center pin from the output, audio, to the audio in on the four pin connector that goes into the radio and the audio ground can just be soldered to the same ground as the PTT. You'll have to play with how much you'll need to turn up the gain on the preamp as well as the mic gain on the radio to not overdrive it. Start low and work up. This is how you would do a standard balanced mic with only 3 connectors, except you would need to have a footswitch or some type of momentary switch for the PTT circuit.
 
It sez in the Heil description of the HM-12 that it works with most radios.....I have to try it with my radio that has talk back to see how it sounds...I am just used to the d-104s that make my radios have all that swing.....prolly should have bought the same setup as Ratso....I did get good radio checks on the audio quality of the mic.....it just does not have the swing of the power mics.....I will try it on the radio with TB tomorrow.....as I am bushed from finishing up on my Beam today. :)
 
I been using the Heil HM-12 on my Galaxy this evening and it works great....been getting compliments on my audio from the locals and the surrounding cities and small towns and rural stations.:thumbup1:
 
I've read Robbs posts on HiFi setup an got ALOT of useful info from it, I have the HIFI rack going but use no mixer. I run
Nady sp5 mic-new $20.0 good starter mic 50-1200hz
To- Art Tube Preamp-used $39.0(upgraded tube)
To-dbx 131eq-used $39.00
To-Behringer Compressor-used $40.0
All useing XLR cable(balanced) straight into mic jack.
I run a 148gtl thats been modded to pass wideband audio, sounds great
May add a effects prossesor to add a hint of reverb and a exciter to enhance overall sound.....:tongue:
