How does COAX routing/positioning affect SWR

S

Installing my radio and having trouble getting SWR down to reasonable levels. Since I'm still in the intallation process, I haven't buttoned down the coax and wires.

I notice that the SWR readings change when the coax is in different positions. Is this right, or am I imagining things?

If coax position and routing affects SWR, what should I do for correct installation, and what should I avoid.

Thanks, for all your assistence.

Shvlhead,

Make sure that your coax is not bunched or bundled. You want it to run as loosely bundled as possible.

There is a lot of good info on radio faq's on top of this page.

Hope this helps.

Hello Shvhead:

You didn't really tell us a lot about your installation. So now it sounds like a mobile installation.

I agree with Jake there, about the ground plane. Is the Coax Shield wire connected to Bronco sheet metal?

Coax was designed to be roughted next to metal, for Naval Ships. Or so goes the story I have.

If the coax is not properly connected an any end, you will see such a change in SWR, when it is moved around.

Suggest you check the coax connections at the radio and antenna.

I may not be the formost authority on installations but..

In my bronco, ive got a Coily on the back (spare tire rack) and a wilson on the roof... I run a additional Ground wire to the mount.. wrap it around the coax and run it straight to the chassis. Along with a wire from Radio & Amp Chassis to Same place Ant is grounded. I run the Radio hot to Fuse box Amp to the battery both Negative to vehicle ground..

Works great. No famous "ford Noise" either. =)

Hope I helped, or at least didnt confuse ya!

I've always just routed it where it's easy and away from anything that might pinch/damage it. I have found that when I cut the coax too short to make a connection, I have REALLY bad SWR Problems
