Hello all I need some help. I sold my Kenwood 440 lastnight and went to put my 2510 in its spot for now and it wouldnt work no light up at all fuse was blown and when it blue my lights on that circut dimed and the leads on the power cord sparked it worked fine this past winter and was just sitting uner a shelf and now doesnt work what would be my best bet to start looking at first?? Nothing smells burnt or looks burnt so Im lost. Could it be protection diode??? Where is it in these radios if it is?? I dint see it on the power leads in the radio.

Hi Tony,
Is there any chance that you got the polarity on the power cord backwards? Even if it was for only a instant, that's long enough to blow out the reverse-polarity protection diode.

The revese-polarity protection diode is at the very rear edge of the main circuit-board immediately towards the front from the 9-pin accessory socket.

Replacing it with a 6-Amp diode will allow the radio to blow a 5 Amp or 6 Amp fuse without being damaged, next time this happens. The stock protection diode is rated for 1 Amp. By the time the fuse blows, the stock diode has melted inside, and becomes a dead short. For the correct polarity OR reverse, after that. Blows every fuse until it's replaced. It's a ONE-TIME component. You can only get the polarity reversed ONE TIME, then the diode will be permanently damaged, and have to be replaced.

At least that's the cheapest of all the possibilities I can think of.

I am looking at this radio and snapping I cannot see a protection diode in here . Is it on the foil or trace side(speaker side) or component side???? I see on the component side there is another little board standing on end infront of the antenna socket or SO connector is it near this??? Usually these things are right where the power and common leads come into the radio chasis. Good thing is the board isnt burnt or smell burnt. That kinda scares me in a way because usually those protection diodes smell like hell when they go.

Ithink I found it its behind that tiny board thats standing on edge I was refering to really cramped in there so Ill wait to here from someone to make sure its it before messing with it

If it is the reverse protection diode you are looking for, yes that is it, right next to the 1000uf/25v cap in the back left hand corner.
What size fuse did you have in the fuse-holder Tony?

We bend a short "foot", around 3/16" at the end of each wire lead on the larger protection diode (after cutting each lead down to about a half-inch), and solder it to the underside foil on the circuit board. Much more room down there.

I havent even tackled that diode yet. LOL it really tight up against this little board in there. I never seen a setup such as this kinda freaky.

Things to Check

For a bd layout of the 2510, go to http://www.cbtricks.com/uniden/hr2510/graphics/hr2510_pb111ab_main_pcb.gif

Your looking in the Rear Left corner for D152.

If the Diode is ok, You may have a shorted Final or driver, Isolate the Finals from Power by pulling the Shorting board (Used for tuning the Bias) It supplies voltage directly from the power cord to the Collector of the Final (thru L135) and to the Collector of the driver (thru L134) [Yes they have voltage on them even when the radio is turned OFF]

I hope this helps,

Roger

that diode looks fine so if it is a short how could that have happen?? It was just sitting the last 2 months..

Check the power cord and connectors first. I had a power cord that was damaged during storage........
Sometimes we try to hard and overlook the simple things.

Tony, just because the diode "appears" to be fine doesn't mean it is OK. It may be,but, you need a meter w/the diode check function to see for sure. Sometimes they will crack, albeit
a hairline at that, sometimes they won't! I'd give that a shot first. Kinda like a resistor, sometimes they appear OK and other times they are burnt.Good luck and keep us posted.Slim CDX285

ha ha great minsa think alike I was just thinking that earlier that it maybe cracked Its got to be something simple it was just sitting and now doesnt work so will see.

grr my typing skills are getting horrible. Thats was what should I use for a protection Diode and an Inline fuse???sorry
