There are three attributes of an antenna, size, efficiency and bandwidth and you can only ever have two so you can have a small antenna which is efficient but it'll be narrow banded. You can have wide banded and efficient but it can't be small.
Compact and discrete means a loss of performance or narrow bandwidth. For example a magnetic loop antenna for 11m is very small and has great performance but change more than a couple of channels and you're going to have to retune it because it has a narrow bandwidth. Conversely a rubber duck antenna is small and has a wide bandwidth but is really crappy on performance.
