I have a well used TS-570D. It was never good on AM TX. RX is fine and I have it hooked to a 3 way speaker. I listen to broadcast MW and shortwave all the time.
On TX everyone always said it sounded harsh and flat. I wonder if it is even true AM or just double sideband? I never bothered to check it out on a SA.
The radio is an absolute trooper on SSB and FSK though. Ive been abusing it for a decade with everything from packet, SSTV, to the latest flavor of the week digital mode. Keeps on ticking. Thats what these radios where made for. I think AM was just an afterthought.
For AM on CB I have more fun using a real CB.
For SSB on CB lots of guys around me seem to like the IC706.

Generally Ham rigs don't do good am because they are designed for SSB. I have told people many times that run a ham rig for SSB and a Cobra 29 for AM.
I see my post surfaced again. Here is an update. I did buy the Yaesu FT-891 and love it and I was reading how to make the audio better on AM. I bought one of the BM-800 microphones and set up the internal EQ for the best audio. someone online posted the settings if you google them. Sounds good on AM and SSB too. and for 39.00 delivered on amazon, it's a no brainer. Great cheap microphone.
Not to steal a thread but what type of drifting from a Galaxy type chassis are you gentlemen referring? I have a Texas Ranger 696 FD1. Its identical to a Galaxy 959 except the counter is 6 digits. The clarifier is unlocked. I let it warm up for 30min prior to talking on LSB. the counter does drift back and forth 27.2850 to 27.2851, or 27.2849 and I have to adjust it back. Its not a constant thing and whoever I am listening to does not really get distorted during a conversation. Is this to what you are referring?
KENWOOD TS-50 is a great AM & SSB radio.I have owned (4) of them & they don't have the crazy menus that most radios do now.I am a Die Hard ICOM Man but the KENWOOD TS-50 is the Exception to the rule.

I own a Kenwood Ts-440. There are mods that most anyone can do like replacement of a few capacitors for a more fuller sound. I have replaced the 455 ceramic filter with an older cb radio ceramic filter and it was night and day difference. Talk about voodoo audio and beyond, that's all I did to that radio for audio mods. The Ts440 that I use is roughly 10khz wide with audio bandwidth on AM from others reporting on their end. I don't have a way to check that but I have had two different people say that to me. Yeah 10khz is unnecessarily wide. But it sure sounds good with rack gear. The 440 is a sleeper.

The Icom 718 is great on AM after a few tweaks. Get inside and turn the carrier down and the modulation up. This allows 100% modulation and sounds way better than any cb or 10 meter radio, even with the stock mic. Put your rack gear into the accessory port in the back, this is how easy it is to "direct inject" the audio. The only thing that would sound better is a tube radio.
In all the Galaxy radios I've owned the digital counter moved a little like yours, but that actually had no affect on the transmitted or received signal. On the other hand, the actual signal would drift from center frequency and not always be shown on the digital read out.
Like you, I turned mine on and let it warm up so that there was rarely any off frequency issues.
So, folks are referring to the actual rf signal being off, not the frequency meter.
I have Yaesu and Icom HF radios, and I personally think CB sounds best with another CB.
I also have the 959 and the FD1 radios and a warm up is the key. They are good despite the warm up issue, in my opinion that is.

My radios all sound perfect on CW. That's all I care about.
Actually I must repost and laughing as I do this. I do not talk a lot on 11 Meter anymore because most of the intelligent people are gone in my area. But I must say when switching between a Icom 718 and a CB Usually a HR2510 or a Ranger with some power behind it I am told the HR2510 or Ranger sound as good or better. Than The HF Radio.
Yaesu GT 757 & 767 sounded good but its not like putting a power mike in it. Apples to Oranges. Yaesu FT-101 was the best. 11 Meter module and you good to go! and I Luv tube types. has a nice sound to them. It Glows
I agree that tubes are the shizzy. But, The 101 is a solid state radio as far as audio. The only thing tube in that radio is the final output.
