I inherited some cb stuff

Badfish, i dug out the 148 gtl and it powered up, I dont have a antenna up so i couldnt key up, its been atleast 13 yrs since i opened the box and i dont remember what the symptoms were sorry, i will try and find an antenna and get back to you.
Hookedon6 I am all ears and am open to all suggestions...
I will mainly talk ssb and run the radio from a base.Thank you for your all responses.

Consider selling it as parts?
 
Give a RCI 2950 /2970 radio converted for CB/11 meters a serious look, or if you are thinking about getting your ham radio ticket look at a HF radio or a HF/ VHF rig of some kind since you mainly work SSB
 
hey uncle groucho, that 148gtl is the same circuit as the 2000gtl so its a great radio. i think you should have kept one of the 2000s but at $400 each you did good. your 12a power supply is more than enough for the 148.
a texas star 500 is a nice compliment to it but you will need a 70amp+ power supply or a big ass battery and a good 10a+ charger to power it.
put up a sirio gainmaster antenna. its the best verticle there is if your power stays below 800w-1000w
put a gray base d104 tug8 mic on it and youll have one hell of a station

I recently sold 2 cobra 2000 new in box with x tra speaker for $400 a piece.
I am willing to spend the money for a decent ssb radio

You can't buy a better SSB radio than a pre 1998 Cobra 148 GTL......fix the 148.

Thank you for all the replies, I also inherited a piece of metal in my eye and had it removed and now have an infection in it and cant see too well.
I live in southern Indiana,floyd county can anyone suggest a radio tech, I work pretty close to Copper electronics and have dealt with them before but I have read so many ROUGH things about them i would like a second opinion.
What would you rec. being done to the 148 to make it rock

If I was you, I would try to find another HR2510 for ssb use. If you are looking for a decent tech in Indiana, go to Big O's cb shop at exit 4 off 465, and ask for Randy. DO NOT LET ANY OF THE CRACKHEADS WORKING THERE TOUCH YOUR RADIO unless it is Randy. He does really good work, but beware the owner of the shop. only trust Randy and nobody else at that shop.
 
I enjoy nostalgic memories of my early CB days.

I just can't bring myself to suggest, that people go out and find an old vintage radio radio to buy. Especially, if it's gonna be their main rig.
