i have my eyes on a Yaesu 990. it was shopped 4 months ago for the sum of 250$ and owned by an old ham. the radio is in perfect shape visually with out a scratch, it includes the stock hand mic and D-104 (matched to the radio) whatever that means. i have heard the radio on the air and it talks very well. i do not have my Ham ticket yet but will very soon. i mostly talk 11 meters on the AM and sometimes SSB right now. can anyone give my any input on the good bad or ugly of these radios. i can get the radio with both mics for 525$ would this radio hold me over for a while. thanks for any and all help

Well I am for the most part an ICOM Man but my 1st HF Base radio was a Yaesu FT-990 which I purchased New. It is a very good radio as it came without any filters but I would guess it would be even better with them. I used it on AM even more than SSB back then with an Astatic Night Eagle D-104 & everyone always bragged about my transmit audio. For just HF it does a great job & as others have stated it's an easy radio to work on & is really an FT-1000 without the 2nd VFO & just 100 watts. It has a great receiver as well.

Honestly you would do better with an old school CB since you are an AM operator. You would not really be using most of the functions of that rig. If you were primarily an SSB op then I would say get it.
