I thought about it, but...

This is the king of simple. Very few built but everybody who hears me says its got great crisp clear audio and very simple. Tempo vhf 1+ And its kicking some serious power for the era it was built in , 68 watts on high and 5 watts on low.
Ps no mask unless im loading or unloading dusty grain and i didnt vote for that arkansas female either. I will keep my firearms

I mean build your own - your own radio - it's like Gardening - only with Silicon and Solder.

It's why I miss Ten-Tec - they had a lot of kits you can use not just for radio but for just about anything.

sadly we lost lots from big cuts in quality around early 80s seems like to me

Andy, clearly you've not seen my soldering...
The uBitx I have set on the shelf 8 months until I had someone else assemble it. It doesn't have the touch screen, yet. Probably won't until I find someone else to put it in.
But, the way it is, I can communicate across the HF bands just by turn it on, turn up the volume, and select the frequency of choice.

@HomerBB - you say your soldering is bad...ok you win, I am not here to tease you - I'm trying to help cheer you up - it's a little tougher than I thought...o_Oo_O

When you folks put up those radios like uBitx and Tempo 1 - I tried to find a niche to start in VHF but after many companies started bailing out of the Amateur market in the late 90's - with them, went my enthusiasm for building.

I was amazed at the rapid change the market went in a different direction - for one day I'm ordering from Ten-tec and about 2 months later I'm calling them inquiring about my order and was told they're no longer producing kits - and would you like a refund.

How can you process that? It's not easy...

It's like - well, s*<EXP>*t what do I do now?

So, you're not alone in your thinking - I've been hanging out here because of the passion I have for radio, it's not as easy to "let it go...."
