What you are describing is what is commonly called a "phono" plug whether you're using it for audio or not.
The plugs are typically, Tip-Ring-Sleeve (TRS) or just Tip-Sleeve (TS).
Tip-sleeve is usually a mono audio connection but may provide two conductor control such as "wired" IR, contact closure, etc.
Tip-ring has only one black stripe or insulator section.
Tip-ring-sleeve is usually stereo, left, right, and common or an XLR (microphone) connection in a different form.
TRS is also used for RS232 or serial connections, Tx, RX, and common.
