Icom releases the new IC-7610 at the Tokyo HAM Fair

With all the improvements and advances in SDR, I think we're in for a revolution in transceivers over the next several years.

I had a Flex 1500. I really liked it, but I wanted more. The 3000 was only thing my wallet could tolerate, but that lame Firewire interface killed the deal. Now, Flex caters to rich hams by not offering a budget model. Rigs like the 7300 and 7610 will definitely compete with Flex, except with fanboys, which Flex has many.

I considered buying a 3000... these days they are pretty cheap. But you are spot on, the Firewire thing killed it for me, too. I'm happy with my FTdx3000 and RSP1 setup anyway. :)
