The electoral college was started primarily because of the lack of communication speed and the Government thought that the population was too stupid to pick a president. Actually the word they used was erudite= lacking education.
Today communication is close to instantaneous and recounts can be conducted in just a matter of hours and the populous is better educated compared to then.
Back then it would take three to four weeks to get the vote tally from California to Washington D.C. and if there was a contested vote three to four weeks to notify California get the count done and the results three to four weeks back to Washington.

If not then it is true that your vote truly does not count. The founding fathers did not trust the general population to be smart enough to elect a president.

IMO if a candidate wins the electoral college but not the popular vote then the winner does NOT have a mandate. Keep the electoral college the way it is.

Trump has promised to improve the VA and increase active military and disabled veteran's pay...... that would have a direct impact on me. I can't see how that is possible with the financial shape the government is in.
It is out of our hands so we can only hope for the best.
As far as Congressmen sitting out the inauguration....that is just childish.
