In the market for a new radio

Has anybody besides myself and m42duster actually used one of these radios? I know m42duster didn't like it, but does anybody else out there that have stated that they are junk, or overpriced crap actually have any time behind the Mic with a 955, or do you all just hate the export radio market, to the point that you will just assume it isn't a good radio?

Very good point. A base 20 miles north of me runs one and it sounds superb. Doug at Custom CB Radio told me on the phone he thinks it's better then a 2950/70 on SSB. My advise is to always buy from a shop that does good quality tech work. Your average ten 4 good buddy clip and tune shop should NEVER touch a Stryker 955 or an RCI 50/70.

Years ago I was at Key CB who is the warranty repair shop for Stryker. In a corner was a stack of 440 radio that were sent in as "broken". The company had already sent out new radio's. Jim tested each one and THEY ALL WORKED fine...lol.

That radio does look like a nice rig. I'm not trying to sell anybody a 955 or anything, but I really like mine. I'm sure there are better radios out there, but I'm happy.

I just got in the pickup, and 10 meters is still going strong, and I made a 1900 mile contact to Anchorage, AK and got a 5x9 report. Can't beat that.

That's great. I'm sure you will like it. There's a few people I talk with on radio forums that have them, and they all like them as well. I'm new to SSB, and Ham radio so I don't know how much better other radios are, but for me it's a keeper.

I will get a nice Ham HF radio, but I'm waiting to get my General License first. Just ordered the study guide. I got the Tech in June this year, and have only used 2 meter and 10 meters. 10M is so fun.

Anyway let me know how you like.

I bought one and it was squealing on SSB. I was ready to trade it off at truckstop cb shop but when they none for trade, I got talked into paying for an alignment. After that it works as advertised!
This has always be my contention about export radios. You spend and you need to spend again to get it right. To the OP, I am sure you will enjoy your new toy. Next time you feel the need to get a toy its ham rig time!!

I'd imagine that the squealing was due to a bad tune and not the radio itself. I've heard a few 955s on SSB and had to ask what they were running for a radio. I was amazed when they told me it was a Stryker 955. I was so impressed that it the solid and clean audio was coming an export, I started a thread here on it. I will say that the price seems a bit high, but I think it is a pretty solid radio for AM and SSB.

They are spendy. That's for sure.

Talked to 949 Parker in northern Cal a couple weeks ago and I must say his 955 sounds AWESOME for an expoxt rig. I could've swore he was on an hf rig. I really wouldn't mind getting my hands on one BUT I'm still saving for a Kenwood..

The ones I've heard don't sound like an HF rig. I've heard a few Uniden Madison radios and a few Cobra 2000 GTLs that sound similar to an HF rig when paired with a good quality mic. The 955s do sound good but I don't want to get carried away.

I will say that I was more impressed with the 955's audio quality than many of the RCI line of radios I've heard on air.

Voyage vr9000

Well, to make a long story longer...I hadn't touched a radio in about 30 years. I am pretty much confined to the house due to "Circumstances" beyond my control so, I was thinking about the different things I could do to help get my "Mind" off of "Things"...SO, I thought of CB...then HAM....So, (I was up to date HAM for several years after I "quit").. So,I saw a CB on Ebay....a Voyage vr9000...never heard of one. I am still living in the 70's and early 80
's (My mind anyway, not my body). In looking at the close up pics I saw all these "Band" selections etc...Hmmm I thought...what kind of radio is this?? It was selling by a pawn shop...I called the guy, who didn't know squat about it...had a real decent price on it so I ended up buying it....Come to find out it was 17-18 yrs old, had never been used!!! Never been opened!!!Come to find out it is an EXPORT!!!! I had never even heard of an "EXPORT" Much less owned one or saw one....I took it over to an old friend who is probably one of the BEST radio techs in the Southeast USA to verify this and check it out! He, like myself couldn't believe it!!! This thing had come from the factory Ready To Roll! Tech man said it was the strongest radio he'd ever seen straight from the factory...he tried to tune/peak but it was already to the high point...Thing has ...what is it... or 4 finals. Or something or other that normal CB's don't have. I have an old Washington a New Galaxy 2547 a 2000 Cobra and run a "Fat Boy" 2 pill with em...the voyage bear-foot beats 'em all!!! (on base antennas) I talk VERY distant DX on the Voyage even in the car...much better than in the house! I wish I could find a bunch of these like this one I bought for a little of nothing!!! I finally got a real "Bargain" off of E-bay! Anyone else ever had anything like this happen?? Anyone ever owned a Ranger Voyage vr900 EXPORT??? I've only seen this one...been over a year and half since I got it and I keep looking...I can find the 10 meter versions but have not come across another Export.
