For increased receive, though it’s a double edged sword, could you just run a preamp?
 
If you're on an empty channel and you have more than S0 on the signal meter then you're pissing in the wind doing any receive mods or using a pre-amp because all you'll do is increase the noise as well as the signals you want and reduce the dynamic range of the receiver making it actually harder to hear signals.

If anything you want to be REDUCING gain if you have anything other than S0 on the meter until it reads S0. You then increase the dynamnic range and reduce the unwanted noise more than the wanted signal making it easier to hear the contact. Yes they will be quieter but that's what you have a volume knob for.
