It's out !! RCI 2970 N4 200/400 watts

Wow, you got some $$$$ tied up in that radio for sure when you consider the purchase price and Toshiba final upgrade.

The TS480 HX should only do 200 watts.

Pushing them past their limits only builds up more damaging heat, exceeds IMD levels and can lead to P.A. failure and the extra 100 watts is hardly noticeble on the other end.

If you tweaked your 7K over it's rated limits, then no wonder it's toast.

If you want more power, get an amp. Leave the radio alone.
Dead silence.........

..Thanks Mudduckmobile.
So with the amp switched off, is it just like a 2950DX?
Also, how hot does it get when working at high PEP?

With the amp switched on, of course : )

I could not find my notes on the N4, So I ran the N4 up on the Bird.
With the amp. off:
LOW {POWER MODE} AM: 1/2w - 4w. Peak 30w / SSB Peak 25w
With amp on:
HIGH {POWER MODE} AM: 10w - 100w Peak 460w / SSB Peak 465w

How hot does it get? In stock form I can not say I have never ran it with out the added 120mm fan.
When the rig comes on, the fan comes on. I was told by a good friend that its the safe way to go and he has 2 of them and 1 N2 he made in to a N4 sometime back. The two little fans inside are set to come on when I key the mic, and the 120mm fan comes on the the rig is powered up. I have ran keyed down, running my mouth 10 mints. on High power on SSB and not had any probs. On AM the longest I have keyed was about 6 mints running my mouth, at home as a base I push my 16 trans BBI box nice and slow.

636L mic. Big and box like, hard to fit in the truck (09 Ram w/center con.) Some times I like it better then my mk3 Optima. N4 I hear from folks say sounds better then Optima on AM but Optima is a SSB rig first, not an AM rig. The N4 gives me more band to be about. I have extra fan on the N4 never had a problem.
Optima has a dx 500 behind it. N4 does not need any help. I have used both on mobile/base. Optima dx 500 works better as base. Hard to find room in the Ram for the N4 but the N4 does work better in the Ram (only one thing to locate st'ed of 2 with the optima setup). I am happy with both rigs. I would pass on the Optima, and dx 500 if some one wanted to give me a N4 in trade. (that works 100% as mine do). My N4 has no extra games to it, just a swich to turn the amp off, and the DEI trans. removed, and Toshibas from RF Parts put in, and a 120mm fan added, and it is set to the book, it does out run the Optima.dx 500 set up by 75-100 w pep but means nothing it's just a number thats all at that small point. I love my Optima... l ove my N4. If I was to do it all over again....N4 hands down.

I'd like to hear more about where you fiited the N4 in your Ram with center console. I believe my 15 Ram is same setup. Time's like these the jump seat option would have been more accommodating , don't you think?

Not sure if my first N4 had issues but even on half or less power, the radio display of the RCI would dim on TX. I had connected the N4 via 8 guage directly to battery. Truck's got a 180A alternator.

You should write beneath that avitar,

NOW you, too, can have TWICE the heat causing instability in your reference oscillator! Be the first on your block to waste $650 on a crappy single-stage radio with near ZERO features most have come to know & love in their similarly priced HAMateur rigs!

...but thank you for sharing ;)

Total waste of money. I agree with NB 100%

Should be alright, unit is located in truck with ac on 99% of time and heatsink is open to the ac duct area in footwell.

In any case, just like home audio amps, i rarely drive the dial to max output anyways by habit. Figured I'd get near N2 figures ( stock ) on the N4 without having to push linear hard. Isnt it.
