JK JEEP - BREEDLOVE ANTENNA MOUNT -

Nice looking, heavy duty mount. Is that Breedlove mount custom made for you, or is it an available product? Also, why the heavy duty mount with a hamstick?

Verrry nice.

Had I known about his mounts before I put the Hustler ball and spring on my 05 Unlimited, I would have got one.

Normally the mount is a 4 inch circle backing plate.

I spoke with Jerry on the phone and let him know that between the tailight and the door jamb was only 3.5 inches.

He said he would check if he could cut it on the sides and still have the bolt pattern in tact. He called me back 10 minutes later and said no problem!

3 days later the mount arrived.

Now there was some problems mounting! :headbang

I had to find a place to mount while being able to keep the antenna "tucked away" during off road trips.

Passenger side body panel was not a good idea, because off roading could " snag" the mount and ventilate the body

Drivers side, same issue PLUS the gas filler is on the drivers side.

The rear mount like I did has a double body panel :scared:

Jerry says on his web site that his coaxial connector can be the main support and dont be affraid to tighten it down!

As for the antenna I have on there now, not a hamstick but a 5 foot firestik for the picture.

HI-Q on the way :thumbup1:

Just a slight correction, tho it doesn't really matter. The actual inventor of that mount was Jim McCurry, K4EDK, now of Cherryville, NC. He had Hank Breedlove, SENIOR manufacture them in his shop. Jim got married and lost interest, and apparently didn't patent the design. His original idea was to compliment the Texas Bugcatcher of Henry Allen, and they were sold in Henry's brochure and website in the beginning. If Mr Breedlove is saying that HE invented this mount, he is not being truthful. Jim just didn't follow up on it. Oh well, if you snooze, you lose...............

I wanted to bring this back up to see if others had used this mount on a JK and any thoughts/experiences they had with it. Thanks!

When I traded, my JK, the mount went with it. Dealer asked what it was, I just said a CB antenna mount.

That Double panel is a pain in the ass, it took A LOT of work getting it to crush the two panels together so the mount was secure. In face I had to take 4 new bolts that were about an inch longer than the ones from Breedlove so I could tighten it down enough so the connection to the coax would be clear. Once the body panels were crushed, I took the longer bolts out and replaced them with the stock ones for a clean look.

I would not mount an antenna there again. By the time it crushed the two panels together enough for the mount to work, it sucked in the outer body panel distorting the panel. It looked terrible if you knew what you were looking for.

As for the performance of the mount, I would buy that mount ALL DAY LONG again, IT WORKED.

I traded my JK so I forget if the passenger side panel is a single or dual metal? If you do not off road, consider mounting it on the passenger side panel.

If you mount it in the same spot I did, be prepared for a few hour install, a lot of cutting, a lot of muscle to tighten it down and a distorted body panel. The longer bolts I used to crush the panels together should be heavy grade so you do not snap them while tightening them down. I could have used an impact gun, I just did not want to break one so i took my time.

Now if Breedlove could make an extra aluminum insert so the panels do not have to be crushed together, it would work great, but he would also have to redesign the inside coax connection so it can make the extra reach of a new spacer. I'm sure he can do it, but there is added machining so added time and $$$$$.

I bought a used TJ because I missed my Jeep, the tail light mount is the best idea for the TJ, that is what I will be installing.

Great! Thanks for the information!

I'm trying to find a solution that doesn't involve the antenna being mounted to the tailgate, as the tailgate has been shown to be a poor ground path and leads to low performance.

The Coolmount Ultramount seems to be an option. More exposed to branches than a full rear mount, but at least it's not on the tailgate.
