No offence to the op but the test used to be the difficult part.
To answer the op question, you always want to try and use an antenna that does not require a tuner. Way to many hams think they have to use a tuner instead of tuning the antenna. Don't sweat the swr though, anything under 2.0 is fine.
Time to back up and re group on that statement.
Just because an antenna coupler is required to work an antenna does not mean it is not an efficient antenna..

Antenna couplers/tuners have their uses as does ladder line for transmission line instead of coax.
I do agree if the antenna is designed and built for MONO band use then an antenna tuner is not required ( IE the 11 meter yagi).
I have a MosleyPRO67B 10 through 40 meter yagi. Now that antenna is a bIT&* to tune but it can be done.
One can also put up a dipole for 40 meters feed it with ladder line use an antenna tuner and work 10 through 40 with good results.
So tuners do have their place in the radio hobby.

You are correct tuners do have a place and can be used effectively. My point was its always better to use a resonant antenna when possible. Your example of the 40 meter dipole is right on and would work well. I just prefer to use a fan dipole with resonant wires for each band. I do have a tuner and do use it, for example when using 6 meters, I will feed that into my HF dipole via the tuner. I never intended to say tuners were bad, sorry you took it that way.

I just put this up, the best dip is at 27,560 and its about 1.7 -1 so that could be improved with more adjusting ,there isn't much going on from 28,300-28,500 flat side ,my antenna set up is far from user friendly,I stopped by the field day set up this morning and had more time to talk with some locals ,nice older guys like my self.
After the test yesterday I saw and heard a ham radio,I never seen one working before,
"Time to learn radio"......

Looks like the Yaesu ftdx 1200
I am looking at the Yaesu ftdx 1200 ,and their desk mic is the way to go for me,
But if I sell another gun,I could get a 3000, is that real time scope and cw decode and a 3 antenna hookups :drool::worth 800. More??? I bought the MFJ 259c to get my beam working,wow what makes life easy.

Congratulations on passing both! Analyzers are nice... I've thought about buying one myself, and probably will eventually. I borrowed one from a club member, and it sure helped me find where my antennas are happy. You can also use it to find where your tuner points are for best SWR, without even transmitting. Really a neat trick! And yes, a tuner is a great tool to have. As others have mentioned, make a resonant antenna, and use the tuner to keep things in line when you vary off the resonant frequency.
