KD5BGT/JOPLIN,MO ?

Yes, it's bad up that way. I have extended kin folks up there, too.

Among other things, the Joplin Home Depot was a complete loss. Only a section of one wall standing.

They are saying not that there are 89 confirmed dead and the number is going to escalate. This could be the worst tornado in US history. Thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Joplin and their families.

Yes, the latest death toll is 89, and fearfully there will be more discovered.

The Home Depot in Joplin was decimated. Our protection protocols for this contingency was followed. The store was opened for business and all appeared safe. A dept manager went back out from safety into the store to locate a missing person. The Supervisor was killed in this attempt . . .

Prayers for family and friends of all in this tragedy.

The first reports in the media claimed that the tornado had cause EF3 damage. Which is damage caused by 160 mph wind speeds. But when a relative newly-built homes are leveled to the foundation, that says to me EF4 or possible even EF5 wind damage. EF5 wind speeds are +200mph. I suspect it will be rated as an EF4 in the final analysis.

The damage path was almost 1 mile wide in places as well.
This is proving to be an unusual year for tornadoes, as in the distribution pattern and seasonal timing is skewed. Should be in TX, OK, and KS as per late May storms. The death counts are higher than usual this year as well.

KD5BGT: are you OK?

The damage is very bad, excessively so. I tend to think the storm was more than initially reported, too.
I thought I'd run up there (45 mins) to check on friends, but the forecast is not good for this afternoon so I'll likely stay put. . .

I bet Charger is glad he isn't there anymore.
I still think about him now and then......

Me too..
When he moved from Texas to Joplin I sent him a c-note to help with the move...I didn't really have the money at the time, but am glad that I was able to help him out.
Deano was a good guy.

We will be praying for you midwesterners that are dealing with the mess.

*** 116 fatal, 400 inj *** a national weather service storm survey revealed that an EF-4 tornado impacted a large portion of the city of Joplin. Wind speeds were estimated at 190 - 198 mph. The path width was estimated at three quarters of a mile wide.

Heyya guys !! my family and myself are all OK....lost power sunday evening and just got it back as of my posting time.....Joplin is a wasteland to be blunt, about 1/3 of the city is just gone....

path was about 6 miles long and 1/2 to 3/4 mile wide...rated as an EF 4 wind speed about 198 mph

I live about 20 miles south of Joplin ....all I got was hail about 1 1/2 inch dia. ... and a small tornado touched down about 4 miles north of me

Cell phone service is spotty, somtimes you get lucky and get a call through and sometimes ya dont

We have yet another round of storms coming through later tonight, and what I am seeing on radar isnt pretty,,,weather underground is shoiwing a nasty line of storms with some storms having tornado icons on them.....here we go again ....
