Will the up and down keys on this mic interface with the Kenwood ts-590 or ts-480sat?

You've gotten your answer, so this is just for information. The preamplifier in an MC-60 just isn't needed in most cases. The best thing you can do is turn it down/off. The biggest problem with using one with a newer radio is changing the connector.

I didn't know it had a preamp....what is it used for ?
When I buy the mic I am going to buy the correct adapter for the radio its going to be used on ts-480sat.

A preamplifier is used to feed a transmitter a 'larger'/stronger audio signal. Some transmitters might be able to utilize it. The TS-480 doesn't need any audio pre-amplification, and has a processor built-in, it doesn't need it.
If you like the looks of an MC-60 then use one, just turn off the preamp. There are other 'desk' microphones with 'up/down' button so that one isn't your only choice. Or, you can just add 'up/down' buttons to another mic, it isn't that hard to do. The hardest thing would be finding a place to drill a hole for a momentary button, the wiring is simple.

the preamp was fitted for early radios that didn't have mic preamps built in unike Macs ts430 which has, if you use the preamp on most modern ham sets the audio will be distorted, they don't need it,

i mind about 10 years ago i spoke to a guy in the usa who i believe was using a ts850 or ts950, i couldn't believe how shite his audio was on ssb, he told me he had asked everyone how to improve it as it was rasping and farting like fuck on ssb, but he could not find any help among his local cb'ers, i asked him what mike he was using, when he said the mc60a i was gobsmacked as i used one on my ts50 and it sounded ace,

i realised right away he had the preamp turned on and told him to turn it off, straight away he had bbc audio, about 10 mins after he stopped thanking me he realised one tiny mistake had been making him look like a guy with all the gear and no idea, i was only too glad to help him find the true prowess of such a fantastic setup, i hope now 10 to 12 years later he is still enjoying that radio, it truly sounded sublime after he turned off the preamp.

if he's on here and remembers the conversation with 108yz024 i hope he's had the pleasure a set up and investment like that truly deserves.;) and i sincerely hope he's regained the hair he must have clawed out trying to solve that problem.

it shouldn't need an adaptor for a ts480, as most kenwod hf sets use the same mic wiring, you will search long and hard before you find a better microphone than an mc60a at the price they retail at, it truly is sublime in the right hands and on many many different radios including cb's.

my bad, i forgot the ts480 was a modular plug, they are a pain in the rectum, i remember doing an mc60a onto a yaesu ft100 with modular plug, if i recall the crimping tool was quite pricey here too.

but the bottom line is the mc60a is an incredible microphone for its price, worked well on every radio i ever tried it on, from kenwoods to early uniden sideband radios and even ukfm radios. ita also solidly built which is a bonus.
